Here is my new 29g and Serrasalmus sanchezi. Sorry the pics aren't the greatest, my camera isn't exactly the latest and greatest. The fact that it is really skittish and hides a lot doesn't help either.

Thankfully this fish is one of the smaller species of Piranha, so he should be fine in the 29 gallon for a few months, then he will need at least a 80 or 90 gallon for him and a few other specimens (they like to stay in groups.)

No they really don't like to be in groups unless you like fish with missing tails and fins, the 29 will be fine for life as they have to be kept alone and only grow to 6 inches.

I think you are thinking of pygos which tend to do better in a shoal. Serras are definitely not shoaling fish, although some people have gotten a few species to "cohabitate" (not shoal and there are always nipped fins to some extent).

Ahhh, I am sorry then. My mistake. I was thinking more along the lines of what I have heard about the Red Belly Piranha... These guys are kept in groups, right? Then again, I don't know much about Characins

Most people say RBPs do better in groups along with other members of the pygocentrus genus (caribe, piraya). However, ime they seem to be much bolder when kept singly. I think this is because in the wild they only school together to avoid being eaten. They are still very untrustworthy of each other which is why people often get a whole tank full of panicked piranhas.

Thanks for the information, it is good to know! :good:

RBPs will kill each other off until there is only 1 if there isnt enough space. Like mr fishy said, RBPs only school for protection, but they are actually better off if they are solitary.
