New Pictures

Wow thats some colour on that Asian, any more pictures ?

Female Lamprologus meleagris

There cute fish love them.

I have a silver and a red, there both about 10-12" I was planning on keeping them together once their tank has matured. Ive seen it done before could there be any issues.

cheers
lovely red  it looks bigger than 10-12" to me
more pics would be good

I know you will of heard this a thousand times. But im having trouble re sizing the pics and keeping the quality. Ill get it sorted.

I imported the red from Kalimantan Indonesia as a juvenile direct from the breeder which i was visiting. He ( it) never cost anything it was kind of a golden hand shake. I'd seen others in the uk in various shops and wholsalers, silver in colour and around 8-15" but nothing as beautiful as the super reds (a picture just dont do them justice)so i had one sent home ( chipped and cert) . Ive never seen/heard of red for sale in the UK. Ive only had him a few months but hes really growing a quite friendly. Im still researching tank mates but im getting mixed opinions. (some say none, some say alot) if any ones had a red and silver together id love to hear about it.

Owww and the very nice looking fish on previous post is a 18" ish show fish unfortunatly not owned by myself and which i could'nt afford $$$$$

Yeah, the silver and black should co-operate, as ive seen lots of silvers being kept in pairs, as well as blacks, so I dont see why the two wouldnt go with eachother, the problem is, if you put the black into the 205, and the silvers not too happy, you have two fish that are arround two feet in lenght fighting, which may be very hard to stop, and probably quite dangerious. Its probably best to keep the black in a large clear bag, see the silvers reaction, and if theres a lot of agression, then the black can be whipped out quickly.

The black does look great CFC :good:

most of the pairs/groups you have seen have probably been raised together?
problem is the silver will now cosider himself the boss of the tank and wont appreciate another big top dweller turning up out the blue.might work might not,id imagine you would have to keep a very good eye on them,i bet they could kill eachother overnight couldnt they?
from what i know you really wanna raise the arowanas together from a young age to minimize the risk

CFC did you get another TFF member a black aro too??

Yes i got my mate one at the same time and his mrs posts on here sometimes under the name of Chali.

I wasnt actually planning on keeping the two arowana in the 205 together, by the time the black reaches a safe size the pond should be built in my fish house and they will be sharing at least 1000 gallons which should cut down agression problems. In the event that the pond isnt ready i will most likely buy a cheap 5x2x2 to house the jardini and put the black in the 180 until the pond is ready.

sounds like a good plan to me
when does work start on the pond?are you gonna have windows on it like paul MTS?do you know what fish are gonna live in it besides the 2 aros?you could do a big aro community with like 5 aros
i hope you do a picture diary on the progress as i would love to do something similar eventually and i could get some pointers,or even better i could come round and have a look for myself :shifty:

I am putting a new roof on and emptying all the crap out of the fish house in the next couple of weeks and then after a chat with a builder friend on the best way to do it i can start laying the blocks for the pond, my pond is going to be a bit bigger than pauls one being roughly around 8.5x6x3.5 feet and built from concrete blocks. I am planning on putting a window in but it all depends on how much a 5x3 foot sheet of 15mm glass will cost me, if its too much i wont bother and will have top viewing only, the fish are large enough to be seen quite clearly and most of them come to the surface for food anyway.

The pond is intended to house one or both of the arowanas, my Leiarius pictus (which is a big fat 2 foot long beast) the motoros and all my p bass as they grow to size, i'll probably chuck the dorado and south american lung fish in there at some point too when they grow too large for being kept in tanks.
Once ive got the existing fish into the pond i'll see how it looks and might add a few more big ol' beasties to it.

I'll try to remember to take a few pictures of the progress as the pond is built, i tend to get pre-occuipied with projects once i start them and forget about taking pictures until its done and then wish i had

as promised
my new red

So CFC, are you not going with a 400g, and going straight to the pond? If so, I think its a good idea. What about your orbignyis???? Why arent they on the list now? Are they still in the 205?
By the way steve, nice aro, is it a chile red?

Thanks, Mike

I lost the smaller of the orbygini's, she was attacked by the largest female motoro a few months ago and lost a large chunk of her disc from it. She survived the attack but was never quite right again and slowly ate less and less before dying a couple of weeks ago. I removed both of them from the 205 and put them in the 180 after the atack and the remaining orbygini is still in there.

I still plan on the 400g but its just a bit too much for me to afford right now, the pond will only cost me about £300 to build and another £200 for the filter where as the tank alone would cost me more than that for the 400g. I was always going to do both but have changed the order around, i'm sure the fish wont mind having the bigger space earlier.
