i just got an otto in a ten gallon tank, planted with live plants and with a few tankmates (3 black skirt tetras, and a dwarf gourami) hes pretty small about an inch and he seems to be doing well, the only thing i noticed is that he didnt go for the algae disk i droped in the tank. But he is suctioned to the wall and seems to be happy. Im new with this species and im just wondering if he is getting the nutrition he needs, and wondering if there was anything special i need to know about these little guys.
-Thanks for any help

ya, young alge is pretty hard to see to the naked eye and thats liekly whats he's eating off teh walls of the tank, iv found that they will take real alge over tabs any day, but if he runs out of the real stuff he'll much the tab too :)

When the algae runs out they also like to eat cucumber. just poke a plant weight through a slice and drop it in. I would get him a couple of friends as they like to follow each other around.

i would love to get one or two more but im really worried about overstocking... I am hoping to upgrade soon but maybe not soon enough, now i have 3 black skirt tetras ( an inch give or take each) a dwarf gourami (2-3 inches) and a little cory (about an inch)

If you plan to upgrade within the year i'd definately get another otto and another cory now. If you keep up with regular maintenance and water changes you will be fine. It's not as if you have loads of the same fish on the same level bumping into each other so you shouldn't have any problems.

When you do upgrade, the ottos and corys prefer groups of 3+ and tetras prefer groups of 6+ or so, so you could get more black skirts.

you should get him a friend... they are very VERY social creatures... i had an otto die of a tumor and i got his friend 2 more ottos a few days later and his color came back and was swimming again!!

i reccomend 2 or 3 so they can school!
