My lfs mentioned the other day that he has just got in a new filter which removes nitrates. He did say that he has never used one so he is not sure how good they may or may not be. But the idea is to put it in with the other filters and it helps to reduce nitrates. :fun:

He still advocates that water changes are the best way to reduce nitrates, but he said if someone has a high nitrate level in tap water or if they seem to have excess levels in their tank and water changes do not seem to reduce them low enough then this might be a good idea to try. :look:

He does not recommend that they get used instead of doing water changes. :X

Has anyone else heard of these filters, and if so, how have you found them.????

I don't know if they fit in all filters but they are made for Jewel filters and are a green colour. :p

I tried the green nitrate sponges about 18 months ago when they first came on the market and personally found they did nothing. Ive had much more success with the media bags from Clearwater and recently with the nitrate sponge granules from Kent Marine.

I dont like to use other things besides plants and water changes to remove anything from my water, alot of the products that remove things like ammonia will also give you a high(false) reading, so how do you know if it removed hardly anything or alot?

....interesting. You seem to be agreeing with my lfs guy - as he says he sells them but he is a fish shop, its what they do. He sounded sceptical about them and felt no need to use them himself, but as he says some people want an easy way out and want to get anything that would mean less work in looking after their fish.

I have not felt the need for one myself, but it would be nice if they did work especially for someone who has high tap readings.

Has anyone else tried them, or know about them??? I am curious and I know my lfs guy would be interested in anything you have found good or bad. Although sceptical he would be interested to hear from someone they may have worked for.

anymore comments welcome.... :D

Hello.

There are nitrate filters, you also can build them yourself.

I know them as a method to reduce nitrate, when your tap water already contains lots of nitrate.

They aren't an alternative to change water- nitrate isn't the only thing which concentration is changing in the fishtank...

A tip: I'm using a "hydrowanne" because my tap water has 33,5mg/l nitrate.
It's a wan over the fishtank through which the water of the filter is conducted.
In it there are lots of hydroculture plants, especially epipremnum aureum which take lots of nitrate when they are growing.
