I just junked my 1st generation iPod Nano, the battery was shot and I tried to replace it myself but it's much more difficult than I thought. This time I got one of the new 80 GB iPod classic's, I wanted the 160GB but then I realized that my entire laptop harddrive is only 120 GB so I could never hope to fill it. Although perhaps it would have been nice to have the ability to back up my entire macbook to the iPod.

Anyway, as you know this one plays video; something my previous one didn't. So I found a nice little application that can rip DVD's into a format that will play on the video capable iPods, or any other media player that uses .mp4 as it's video file format. The application is called handbrake, it's an open source program an as such has absolutely no cost and no registration requirements, it's just a no nonsense get it done type of program.

With Handbrake you can decrypt DVD's, change their quality settings to minimize space, and do all sorts of other things. My movies have been taking about 45 minutes to convert, I have 2 GB of RAM and a 2.0 core two duo processor.

Anyway, I know there are quite a few iPod users as well as others who may like to know about this so there you are. The program is downloadable in both windows and Macintosh formats.

Enjoy!

imo, much better then an iPod, but then again, some people are just iPod people.

I don't want any of those, especially the Zune, They're dead in the water as far as I'm concerned. I'll stick with the iPod, it has the best selection of accessories, the best online music store, and the best customer and technical support (Apple can't be beat in this category I'm afraid).

Plus, I run Macintosh and none of those would even work for me unless I installed Windows and I've vowed to never touch that again.

What about those media players is it that you feel is so much better?
iPods are cheaper than any of those you posted. I can get a 4 GB video capable iPod Nano for $149 in stores or $129 at the University bookstore, or I could just get one with 2x the storage of that Samsung for the same price. My 80 GB iPod only cost me $228 at the bookstore, otherwise it's the same price direct from Apple. And that last one, I can get a 160GB iPod for less than what they want for that 60GB Creative. I just don't understand what your argument is against iPods!

Most MP3 players would work fine without windows as they act as a removable hard drive (like a USB stick). This is exactly how my Sony Ericsson Walkman phone reacted to my MacBook Pro.

In fact, as much as I like my iPhone, I really miss being able to just navigate through it and pick files I want to just drop in it.

The best argument against iPods is the fact that Creative beat them in every proper sound quality test and usually have longer battery times. Then there is the fact that Creative came up with the software that runs the files while Apple just stole it and then tried (to late) to patent it.

Also, any music player can use music downloaded through iTunes.

As to the price, the 160GB iPods are not generally offering 4.3" colour screens, but rather 2.5, making the Creative far better for watching videos on. The next step to make it much better is the fact that it can play a whole host of different formats, rather than trying to lock you into Apple formats.

You yourself said you could never fill 160GB, so why not put the extra money into a bigger screen so you can actually see what you are watching? ;)

I have a iPod Classic 80gb Black as well and it's great. I too use MAC's. Actually I have a couple of MAC's, one for work, one for play, and one for home computing needs (mostly the wifey). Apple does in fact have the best customer sevice I have ever dealt with!! Hands down the best, nicest, and fastest customer/tech support. Over the last couple of years I have dumped my Dells and HP's and gone to the dark side!

Once you go MAC, you never go back!!
