Clown Fish are marine fish my dear which need a completely different set up than Tropical fish. Another decision for you to make

Most use what's called a gravel syphon - syphon the water into the bucket, dispose of it then replace with clean dechlorinated water using a bucket again.
Alright thank you Sophie :) forgive my noobness but how do i get dechlorinated water?

You use a dechlorinator :p Any fish shop will sell this, it will state on the bottle "removes chlorines and chloramines". Chlorine essentially is used to clean the water for us to drink but in turn is toxic for our fish :) There's loads of varieties to choose from, you will have to visit your local fish shop and ask what they have :) Maybe start a post on here asking what dechlorinators people use and work out what will be the best suited for you.

Now I have no need to judge, but can't clown-fish switch over to freshwater?

No!

Nemo does not like freshwater...that would be one situation where he wouldn't 'just keep swimming'!

. But seriously I heard that clowns can become freshies.

Day off today so whilst out and about on my bike i popped into a couple of pet shops that stocked fish and made a list of a few that i like

(Correct anything that's wrong in this post)

Tropical Fish (i think)
Tiger Barb
Black Ruby Barb
Guppy
Neon Tetra
Penquin Tetra
Cardinal tetra
Golden Panchax

Marine Fish (again i think)
Flame Angel
Regal Tang
And of course: Clown Fish

given that your a begiiner, you would need a 55 gallon to start of with a marine tank and even if you were expericened im not sure those fish would be best in that size of the tank. id stick with freshwater fish.

Almost decided on guppy since i believe that all the different colour ones could live together (correct me if i'm wrong) theyre fairly cheap to buy and dont grow that big? (Again CMIIW)

guppys are great, just remeber is you get females and males a 2 female one male ratio, although its better to get just males.

Wouldn't just males fight? From what I've seen on here anyways, I assume it's ok to mix guppy colours/breeds (whatever theyre called)

males wont fight if theres enough and if you see them fighting its usally pecking order, and yes its okay to mix guppys.

Well that's that then. I like guppies :) now just need to buy a tank and start cycling

Hmm, there's a LOT you can do when you have a fresh start like this - Go and read through a fishless cycle where you cycle your tank with pure ammonia. after that, you should plant your tank.

You shouldn't really have your tank in direct sunlight so either find a new spot or cover it.

I like to put sand as my substrate with rocks and driftwood.

After that you should try fish like Bettas, Mollies, Tetras, Platies, Guppies, Barbs.

Definitely have a Pleco or two in your tank just because they help with the maintenance of the algae and they're just really cool in my honest opinion.

Once you've had those fish for a good long time - few months to a couple of years, you can move on and explore the possibilities of other fish species.

I should also add, is that you do water changes every day, week, or two weeks - I do mine everyday just a little bit so it adds up to 50% of the total water at the end of the week. But it all depends on how many fish you have in your tank. Tell us what fish you want and how many so we can help you in what percentage you should be doing everyday or weekly

Hope I helped, and welcome to the forum

dont get plecos for algae eating as there add twice as much to the bioload as they due to the bioload.

ok great keep us informed on how it goes and ask if you have any problems

Depending on the tank size, certainly get a pleco if you want one, but not to take care of algae. You should fix the root of the problem rather than the symptoms.

It seems that you have decided on freshwater though..any idea what size tank you're going to get? You can measure the area and plug it in to the calculator at the top of the page to get a volume. Bigger is always better

*Edit* My bad, you already did measure. Sorry :p
