I have about 40 guppy fry and they will probably get eaten in the community tank they are in. I have a 10 gallon tank that has no water in it as well. If I used substrate from the mature tank and used the water from the mature tank and put it in the 10 gallon tank would the fry be able to survive?

Can you use some of the filter media from your established tank and get it in the new one ? just some of it ?
Gravel doesnt contain that much bacteria really.
You also need a small fry type filter otherwise they get sucked up, they usually cost about £3 and run off an air pump.
Other than that they probably will get eaten, im suprised if they havent already. You could also use a breeding net until you get sorted out, although they are NOT ideal for more than a few days.

They need feeding about 3-5 times a day, a small ammount, but very small food, either tetra fry food or liquifry 1 for the time being.

What other fish are in your community tank?
if its just Guppies then some will survive if they have enough hiding places to go and are fed regulary until they are too big to eat.

 actually it can contain a surprising amount, it just isn't that effective without consistent water flow through it, which is why undergravel filters used to be used so much

you could try making one of your own. there is a pinned thread in the hardware and diy section here if you used gravel from the mature tank it would give a big boost. :good:

yup, fry raised in a breeding trap/net tend to be much smaller than fry surviving out of it. as loose in a tank they can scavenge for more food, algae etc.

there is an angel fish in the tank and he will surely eat all of them..........so i will try to move some media from the other filter into the ten gallon so some can survive.
