My nephew gave me a unused 10G tank. My wife likes fancy guppies so I decided to go with the guppies. I set the tank up with black moonsand, large driftwood decoration, black background, biowheel filter, heater, and a deluxe all-glass lighted hood. There will be no plants.

The tank is now cycling with 3 guppies. I assume there will eventually be algae present. How is it controlled in a non-planted tank. There does not seem to be much info on non planted tanks on this forum.

You don't have to turn on the lights unless you want to view the fish. That way, there won't be algae because there won't be light.

Usually, though, the fish are kept to be viewed, so I would think that the lights would be kept on for most of the day.

Regular water changes and some elbow grease now and then should keep the worst of it at bay, though IMO a little algae looks good in the tank.

I take it that it's a fluorescent light...

my tanks only get lights on for 6 hours a day this keeps the algie down in my tanks. when i come home from work till i go to bed try this you can enjoy your fish at night when you can relax and appericiate them mostif you are not in the house put out the lights

Try to keep the tank away from direct sunlight too. That will help with algae control as well. :) Are you sure you don't want even some fake plants? Silk? The Guppies would appreciate them. And on that note...what sexes do you have?
