New Glow Fish (Controversial)

Oh, and it's not hard to get them here.
They sell them at many Walmart chains.
People just bag them, put them in the cart with their other groceries, pay for them, and go.
No strict regulations.

^^ Not on the sale of glofish no. But if you looked into the application they made to make them legal for sale you'd probably find it was quite lengthy.

I'm not denying that the UK is the strictest on genetic modification. Just stating that just because they have been allowed to modify colour with the jellyfish gene doesn't mean that it can neccesarily be used as a stepping stone like many people believe. Genetics and genetics modification is something to be aware of, but not 'wary of'. If you know what I mean? lol.

I guess after all the science behind it may well help ourselves somewhere in the future or even perhaps in the close future. Though ethical? I'm not too sure!

Does feel like we're playing god a little too much sometimes, though I Strongly support stem cell research however that is a dodgy matter too. So I could be contradicting myself in side my head here.

Finally.. I was thankful not to see anything about money however at the end of the topic it went on about how much money its expected to make :( I thought it was in the name of science!

"Welcome to the world of tomorrow!"

I can expect to see these in a low quality fish store labelled "Rave Fish", or not as the case may be... poor UK.

That would really hurt I'm sure!

Really my point here wasn't to stir up a bunch of sand. Human beings are not perfect no matter how hard we try. We should be aware of the risks and dangers of such things, and of the possibility that things may go wrong or end up in the wrong hands. It's only a matter of time before we hear of genetically engineered fluorescent lab rats using similar techniques learned in modifying fish. What comes after that?

If what they have done to makes these fish will help out with curing medical problem or do some good for the medical community I think it's great they can do this. If they did this just to make cool fish that's a huge waste of time. Why much humans mess with nature just for fun.

But I think there might be a way adding genes to an egg could be helpful for other reasons besides making crazy freaks of nature.

Wake up sheeple! Zombie bomb carrying glowfish with hitler moustaches are being developed as we speak!

I for one welcome our new zombie glowfish overlords :)

They have already implanted the jellyfish gene into many animals. They use it as a gene marker. Eg they implant it in a certain cluster of genes and where ever they're expressed the animal glows under UV/in the dark (can't remember which).
My point was that the technology has been available for years but the rules/laws are the reason we don't see glow in the dark dogs for sale.

Far too slow :p
There's a whole host of species that have had the Green Fluorescent Protein (or other colours) added to different genes to find out about expression and regulation. It's a useful tool because the tag is linked to the protein so you can see where and under what conditions it appears without having to continually sample the tissue.

these look like 'Chavs' of the fish world, whats next a burberry patterned fish?

That would be pricey! Im sure many fakey alternatives will be available though ;)

James.

What i'm wondering is if a glofish will only school with it's own colour.
It's not exactly on topic, but since we're talking about glo-fish...

Haha, Burberry fish?
