I haven't had a tank in several years (the last one I had was a 55 gallon tropical community with mollies, guppies, etc, and then a lone betta for a while in a 6 gallon) but wanted to get back to having a betta in the house. I've done a ton of research to try to give the little guy the best home possible and finally brought home a dumbo ear male.
I got my fish from a pet store rather than a breeder, so I'm hoping the little guy can shake off living in that terrible little cup at PetCo and that he likes having 6 gallons to himself. Eventually, if he does well and the tank does well, I may add another fish friend, like a small bottom dweller that is betta compatible.
