Hi

2days back i bought a small 1in flowerhorn, kept it in my 3feet x 2 feet x 1 feet tank with a small pleco & a snail.

Now looking @ the FH pics on websites i hav a few questions!

1. My FH is a bit grey with blue and greep shades. dark spots on its head and body. What colour will it grow to be? Ne specific food for specific colours?

2. This little FH eats too much! Its belly looks full and then to it will eat!!! When should i feed it and when now?

3. Do i get a companion for him? A flowerhorn or sm other fish?

You will need atleas ta 100 gallon fish tank. Right now you have 45 gallons. Less than half what he should be in. Theese fish grow into MONSTERS. They polllute the tank quickley, and are agressive. If you arent going to upgrade your tank, take him back.

Ok

I'll buy a new tank in a year!!! ( plz let me know the specs of the 100 Gal tank & its weight too, dont want to flood my house!

That answers thee 3rd question i cant get ne more fishes!

Plz guys . wat abt the first two question?

wat colour ? i really wanna know its "to be colour" Or atleat make it RED in colour!

Are your parents' allright with getting 100gal tank for you?

You can't force your flowerhorn aka flowermutt become red as your flowerhorn's too young and no one knows what colors he will become, he might be female, who knows?

Flowermutt eat everything so you don't need to worry about what kind foods.

There are not lots of flowerhorn breeder/keepers in this forum...probably due too many crazy strains of flowermutts lately. I just don't get why there's too many strains....

So tell me why they need such a large tank, they will reach 14" at the very max, an inch or 2 off an oscar yet an oscars min tank is a 55 gal.

FH's are are pretty easy to keep, treat them like you would a red devil or midas. They should have at least a 55gal tank and dont tend to accept tankmates. Feed good quality pellets supplimented with frozen foods such as bloodworm and dont feed any feeder fish. I've had quite a few FH's, they are great fish and make very good "pet" fish.

Well, from what i have heard from people who keep flowerhorns , they need a minnimum of 100 gallons. Something about fin development and keeping the water clean enough for the bump to grow properly? I am not completely sure, but that's what I was told.

I like flowerhorns until they got loose in Florida canals...

55 gal min for oscars? Isn't that awfully small for 16 inch long oscars. But T is right on flowermutt about keep it in 55gal depends on what wacky strains. There's kamfa, bonsai, killin parrot and balloon strains. But I bet that OP has regular sized flowermutt strains, mostly likely low grade ones as they can grow huge and really nasty one....think the flowermutts as ugly oversized convicts.

Nope they dont need such huge tanks, as I said 14" is the absolute max size. A 55 gal tank is fine for a single fish and possibly even a pair.

I'm not sure where your getting 16" from. Oscars in captivity reach 12" at the very max so a 55gal its the minimum size tank. Flowerhorns getting loose in florida canals are not the fishes fault. Its irrisponsible owners. Do you also dislike convicts, mayans, firemouths, red devils, jaguar cichlids, jack dempseys etc etc etc as all have been introduced to Florida waterways over the years. As for being ugly oversized convicts, they dont really resemble convicts, more like the parent species trimac cichlids.

I don't think 12 inch is really max size for oscar in aquariums. I saw 14 inchers in my lfs and I saw a 16 incher one once. I really don't feel its okay for keep oscars in 55 gal, more like 75gal.

Reason why flowermutt were ugly oversized convicts because flowermutts breed easy and very fast. And they are very aggressive as convict. I don't say they looks like a convict, they just act like one.

I like all PURE cichlids in Florida but dump hybrids in the waterways of Florida is very bad thing to do.

Whats the difference? No cichlid should be there in the first place regardless if its hybrid or not. Yes FH breed easily but no easier than most cichlids that are alredy there. Convicts, red devil, mayan, jag etc

Still flowermutt is very serious invasive in Florida when it has able to hybridizating with their related cichlid species in the canals and replace other cichlids with flowermutt.

On other thing, I've eaten flowermutt and it was very tasty. I caught a 16 inch long flowermutt when I was in Florida last summer.

Again thats no different to most other cichlids I have mentioned. Convicts can breed with lots of other species and reproduce far quicker than flowerhorns.

The difference between convicts and flowermutt is their size. Convicts are only fish food to the big cichlids while flowermutts are pretty big in Florida and unlike pure cichlids only breed with their own species (in wild), flowermutts choose any species as their mate. Convicts in the wild (or in canals) probably won't mate with different species, therefore flowermutt is worst invasive. Thankfully they are popular panfish, unlike convict which are too small to be panfish.

Liver is not a healthy diet for fish, they are unable to process the animal protines and will eventually develop serious problems. Best to feed with cichlid pellets and chopped prawn or mussel.
