We have two neons and two platty's.

We're sort of looking for a 'feature fish' to complete our small tank stock.

Obviously we need one that won't eat the other ones... what kind of fish (preferably slightly larger than the >2.5 inch platty's) could we get that is independent and interesting?

5.5 is kinda small, but you might want to try a dwarf gourami or some sort of mollie (sailfin mollies are very pretty)... you could also go for a nice looking bottom-dweller - there are a lot of different types of catfish, loaches, etc. that would look good.

Best bet is to make a trip to the LFS and see what's in stock and get some ideas.

It sounds like you are pretty much stocked to the limit actually. A general guidline is 1" of adult fish per gallon. If your mollies are say 2", the neons make up the rest. What kind of filtration do you have? My suggestion is head to walmart and pick up a 10 gallong tank, $8.97. Then you can add a few more fish, as well as your centerpiece fish.
