The labs used by the water companies have very expensive equipment for testing water. My younger son used to work as an analyst for one and he thought our home testing kits were hilarious, particularly nitrate. Though my API nitrate tester and my water quality report for nitrate do agree with each other (API gives between 0 and 5; water company says 2.8)
