I wonder if the water that houses captive bred angels and bosemanis that are then distributed to pet stores differs much. That I’d like know. If it does I might consider giving up the hobby
Soooo not sure why I’m chiming in on this thread... BUT now that I’m here and I got the headache from reading all this I can’t help myself...
Most fish breeders keep fish in water very similar to their natural habitat otherwise they won’t typically breed. Thus the water does vary greatly from breed to breed. Most fish stores have RO water systems to provide water to their tanks and most fish stores have filter systems connecting groups of tanks. Thus stores must use water that will generally keep most fish alive and not too stressed even if it isnt perfect. RO water is truly neutral and meets this requirement, that’s why they use it. Some fish still die at the store from water stress though since this doesn’t match the water they where bred in. That is also why most fish, once brought home and placed in great conditions, get healthier/brighter/etc. So in conclusion, the water at stores vs the breeders water for each species is very different.
I’m new to the hobby and know this... I know to research compatibility and water needs... I may not have gotten it all perfect but I listen to those who know more than I and I try to correct mistakes when able.

Link? Regarding breeder water

I don’t have one handy but there are multiple breeders on this website. They can detail the incredible lengths they go through to breed quality fish including water parameters. Sadly, I don’t think they will make it this far into this post to answer and I don’t feel the need to justify my knowledge to you currently.

You came here for advice from other aquarists about how to stock your aquarium. They're going to give you said advice and you may not like it. No one can force you to do anything but I'm going to give you my recommendations.

I have kept angelfish since childhood, successfully and less successfully before I knew what I was doing. With a tank that size, you could house a pair of angelfish and some other compatible additions. I wouldn't try for more angels than that. They grow to be large and can be absolute arseholes to each other, especially in cramped quarters with little cover.

Boesemani rainbowfish get to be around 4 inches long and prefer groups of at least 6. I wouldn't keep a shoal of them in anything smaller than a 55 gallon tank. If I were you, I would re-home yours and think about a smaller rainbowfish species or something else all together.

As for corydoras catfish, they are fully compatible with angels and an excellent species for a 40 gallon tank. However, as others have mentioned, they are shoaling fish, even more so than the bosemani.

Most species of shoaling fish can survive alone. Many large or active species can also survive in tanks too small for them for a good while. However, survive is about the extent of it. They will never thrive- their color and behavior will always pale in comparison to responsibly kept fish and you'll miss out. Their lifespan will also likely be shorter and stress will lead to increased risk of disease. In the case of large fish in small tanks, increased bioload will also put pressure on the system, which is terrible for water quality.

A human being can survive alone in a single tiny room provided their most basic needs are met. However, you would like to live in that room for the rest of your life?

In summary, were I in your position I would re home the rainbowfish, create a Cory shoal (or re-home that too and find a different species), get another angel and work from there. Just avoid anything that is likely to nip your angel's fins or get eaten. Best of luck. I hope you make a wise and compassionate decision.
What’s the point of a shoal absent predators?

The OP thinks he/she is having a bit of sport with the more sensitive/gullible board members........how long before he/she realises it’s the OP who is being played with?

My moneys on it actually being the “what kinda pansy ass forum is this” feller who flounced off a few months back over slightly similar fishkeeping issues that disturbed his macho sensibilities.

Can admin/mods check IP or device numbers on here? I know they can on a few U.K. football forums where the above behaviour is a lot more popular.

Regardless its 1:30AM and the first small steps back the normality of a post C19 world are being taken in the U.K. today. Which will most likely mean next lockdown starts early June. I’m off to bed.

Have fun and stay safe.

First time here and I’m a sensitive man

Angelfishes are schoolingfish that should live in groups of at least 5. Within this group, a hierarchy will be set : a leader-dominant and the dominated. This hierarchy can be set in a few hours or a few weeks. Hence the quarrels/rows. Increasised during the breeding season. They ARE cichlids. It's a part of their lifestyle. Reason why they need a long and tall tank offering many hiding places as refuges to escape badgering, being a 150 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm as a minimum tank, much planted, and acidic soft water.

Breeders that supply pet smart and PetCo are on here

I think it would be really great if the breeders that supply Petsmart and big chains divulge the water parameters that they use so People that care about their fish can act accordingly

I suppose if you had a friend who worked in one of these places they can take a water sample from a shipment but then again it might be dirty at that point
