A relative of mine gave me a fish as a late X-mas present. I was both thrilled and surprised!

Unfortunately, the new fish's origins were, by description of my relative, a slightly run-down shed stall with fish swimming in brown, smelly, sticky water. With such unhealthy and disturbing living conditions, I'd like to quarantine him for a while. Trouble is, I don't have a hospital tank right now. No filters either. I lent them to a friend of mine whose tank busted after a freak accident. It'll be sometime till she can return it (lol I'm too generous and she's a very dear friend and fellow fish keeper/hobbyist to me

). As of now, the poor fishy is in a big basin.

I had no choice. I don't want my other fish to get sick. What should I do?

Yep, second the plastic tubs. I've seen them as big as 80 litres. If you are in the UK, Wilkinson's sells them for under £10 last I checked.

Yeah try and get hold of a large plastic storage tub a small filter and a heater. If you want you could make a small air driven filter with a small tub, filter media and an air pump - there are a few tutorials on the net if you search for it :)

What kind of fish is it?

wilkos bucket 99p and a diy airpump filter, works a treat short term. touch of stresscoat and an all purpose tonic, minimal food , can we assume its a goldfish?

Thanks guys. I'll try these "improvised" solutions!

The fish is a small rainbow shark of about 5 inches. I don't know how he survived under such conditions.

He's doing fine right now. Imma transfer him to the improvised quarantine "tank" later. :)
