New Fish New Tank - Pics

That looks like tuffa rock. If it is then it will raise your pH, which is fine in most cases. Except when you want to keep tetras (especially neons and cardinals) as they prefer acidic water. Otherwise nice tank.

The rock i was told is just normal ocean rock, i wasnt given a particualer name.. my PH is sitting at 7 at the min?!

The rock will disolve into the water and slowely raise the pH,
the rock looks like the same rock i used in my cichlid tank and it did eventually end up at a ph of 7.6.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong though :good:

Either way (neon and cardinal) tetras don't do well in alkaline water. Lovely fish but they are not compitable with my pH 7.8. Not sure what your pH is but hopefully they will be ok. Tuffa rock doesn't help the situation.

Nothing personal but your setup looks more like a poor man's marine tank. I think probably because of the lack of plant. The more plant you have the lower the nitrate and (in theory) the less often you need to do water change. For example my nitrate stays zero even after 2 weeks (the longest I have gone without water change). I do like your tank though as it is clean and simple. I wish I didn't spend so much on wood and rock in my big tank!

I also did have tuffa rock in my tank at one point. Managed to get a full refund from the LFS. Very important to have a good LFS.

Thanks, in no way am i trying to make it look marine, im just not in to alot of plants in the tank, plus its only my 1st one and a small one at that.

I may not have mentioned, but the tank is in my bedroom, so i want it to look clean and simple :)

Ill keep my eye on the rock then, i had no idea it will raise the PH, anything i can do to cambat that?

Im picking up a pair of rams next week so will be doing a clean this weekend, cleaning and water changes do not bother me as its all part and parcel oof this addictive hobby :)

Not really. Wood may leak tanis but it doesn't do that forever.

I do like your setup BTW. As I said I regret putting so much stuff into mine but paid too much not to use it...
