New Filter

I have just got a new, more powerful filter for my tank. I know that there's no beneficial bacteria in it yet, so I have the old filter still in the tank. My question is - Should I still have the old filter running, or is it ok to leave it sitting in the tank for a few weeks, switched off?

I would keep it running, if I'm not mistaken the bacteria will die off if theres no water running through the filter. It can't hurt to keep it running anyways.
