I'm after a little advise on changing from 1 external filter to another without causing my tank to cycle.

I currently have a 200 litre tank with a Fluval 205 external, all cycled and running smooth.

The 205 is recommended for tanks upto 200 litres so I'm guessing it's at the limit, so I have bought an All Pond Solutions capable of filtering upto 400 litres.

What I want to know is what's the best way to swap them over? I know I can put the media from the 205 into the APS but I'd rather have the correct media in there and also means I can sell the 205 with the media in it. So do I just put all the media in or as much as I can get in and let it run for a couple of weeks then take the 205 media back out?

Any suggestions guys.

My advice is based on having recently changed from an internal to an external.

My advice would be to get as much media from the old filter into the new filter, and then remove the old filter.

I got all the media from my old filter squashed into the new one by taking a few of the pads out of the new one. As time went by, I gradually replaced the old stuff with the pads that were meant to be in there and everything was absolutely fine.

I was advised by knowledgable people on here that there's no need to run two filters at the same time.

I now have two filters, each with the correct media in them.

Cheers guys,

That was kinda my thinking Martyn. I think that's what I'll do, it should be here tomorrow.
