I have a new internal filter which contains a sponge and also a small carbon sponge. What is the carbon for and does it really need replacing as it says this in the manual. I know manuals usually say that the normal sponge should be replaced every few months and I know that is wrong but I've never had the carbon bit before.

Any ideas anyone :/

Carbon is usually in filters as a 'scrubber'.
That is, the filter medium will intercept and hopefully clean the water of large to medium particles, but the carbon is there to absorb other, microscopic particles.

Typically, this is used in conjuction after medicine, to clean the water.

Its possible to operate without it, but some people swear by it.
In addition, others will state that long term use is bad, as it 'leaches' what it absorbs back into the water. Whether this is true or not, I don't know.

So if I just leave it in should I replace it and how often should I? Surely this will contain some bacteria involved in the cycling process and if I swapped it for a new bit my tank would have a cycle again?

Carbon is for chemical filtration. I use it to remove meds, or more often on a new or newly cleaned tank. I run it for a few days & pull it. Carbon looses it's effectiveness after a couple weeks, you can replace it if you choose to run it.

Some people do swear by it, supposedly gives crystal clear water. I run sponges & floss, it's cheaper & works just as well.

If you are worried about a mini cycle when replacing it, just float the old carbon in the tank for a few days after replacing it with new carbon.

Some research has been done showing a relationship between carbon & HITH in cichlids. This is another reason I run it only when I have to.

I'm thinking of leaving it out but I don't know if that will best :/ I have never used carbon before and my other tank cycled ok... :(
