I got a new female swordtail from the lfs yesterday and she is in hospital tank. Ok, she looks swolen like pregnent, which is ok, but her potty hole looks swolen, and stuffed up. I thought it may be swolen as she may be getting ready to deliver, but it has been 24 hours and nothing yet. If you look closely, you can see what looks like a big redish area. My question could she be constipated and cant pass the feces? If so what do i do? I tried to give her some peas, but she said eeew and swam away. I have yet to try bloodworms, but will today. Could she have a fry stuck in there that is too large to pass? If so what do it do. Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

Ok, many lookers, but no replys at all? If you look closely at her you can see what looks like little red hairs coming out, they are no longer than about 1/16th inch. Anyone with any ideas of what could be going on? Any ideas how long it takes for them to give birth if indeed that is what is going on?

No ideas at all, but my friend has guppies in a 10 gallon that have those red hairish things, too... and only one has had babies, and she's had them for three months.

Thanks for the replys, i have been searching the net all day looking for info on this. So far i have narrowed it down to worms. Nasty sounding I knowbut apparently not uncommon. If they are callanus worms, treatment is paracide-x, or paracide -d, guess i will have to figure that out at the store. May also be another type of worm and treatment for that is Disco Med by Aquatronics. I think the Dosco med treats both of them, but have to check the ingredients in it to see if it has paracide-x in it. Hope all turns out well for her. Fish have become quite the learning experience for me. But just think, if anyone else finds hairs inside the fish, we will all know what it is. Sandy
