In my LFS there is quite a lot of posters and stands about the New Era fish food. There are 3 types I believe and I have always used aquarian flakes as the main source of food for my tanks. I was just wondering if anyone had used this New Era stuff and which one I should get for my tropical tanks.
Thanks
James

I thought there were only for marine stuff?

Infact reading they do stuff for tropical too, I'd save your money and buy normal flakes. There a balanced diet for fish anyway and don't cost that much.

New Era are a brand of pretty good quality IMO, i tend to use their pellets quite a bit personally. Though having said that there is absolutely nothing wrong with most of the less expensive food.
I really would not even factor money into the equation unless you really need to limit spending, it is only couple of pounds extra and it's not like you purchase food every week. Just experiment and stick with the food you feel you like the most comfortable feeding your fish with.

Ooh oh a you may have opened a big can of worms. People who use new era see it as the best thing since sliced bread but I have yet to use it but will be getting some to compare between the hikari and tetra products I use. They list all the ingredients of what goes into them which is a good thing but I have heard they are some what exaggerated and the actual net weight is different.

So I should just go for some, see what they're like and make up my own mind? Money isn't really a limiting factor when it comes to food as it lasts a while. Just like Prime, costs a bomb but lasts forever. Just Clown Loaches that are ridiculously expensive nowadays.
I'll ask at the LFS next time I go and maybe pick some up. I have a shrimp tank too and they like the pellets apparently

New Era pellets are amazing!!

We use them all the time now :) the catfish pellets especially, they are fantastic quality, little waste (if you dont over feed) as they hhave better nutritional value and less waste products!

They really put the weight on the fish!!

I rate New Life Spectrum very highly but for general use, the food doesnt go very far whereas New Era does, its really 'oily' with good oils that make the put on weight and hold a steady good weight whilst producing less waste than over feeding low quality flakes with high waste products like ash in it.

Cant rate New Era pellets any higher!! (you dont need many at all!!!) but i have to admit not liking their flakes, their flakes come off the machines in sheets which mean they are HUGE and you have to break it up yourself.

So just get the tropical pellets to start with? I'll have a look for the New Life Spectrum ones too

I have range of new era foood just got the suction ring grazer food...keeps them happy for hours and get to see them all at the glass

I have a 30gal freshwater community tank, with an Eheim filtration system. My fish and plants were doing extremely well for several years on Spectrum Thera. Then I switched to New Era Mini TropicalGrazer. Worst mistake I ever made. First, the fish barely touched it. I used it for over a month, assuming some acclimation time was needed -- as recommended by their man in the colonies. This meant that I had alot of uneaten food at the bottom of the tank, all slimey and decomposing by the end of the day. No other changes were made to the tank: temperatures were constant, same livestock, same water chemistry (discounting what changes were made by the food, as you'll see).
Then my plants started dying off. All the Anubias lost their leaves within two weeks. The rhizomes literally rotted away. The swords fared barely better. There was some fish die-off.
Water changes removed most of the residual particulate matter but I ended up having to dismantle and clean out the Eheim every week. The media were filthy and the ceramic tubes on the bottom were clogged with black solid material. Likewise, the hoses were clogged.
It has taken me four - six months -- and more Anubias -- to get the tank healthy again. There is a greyish residuum on top of the substrate (not seen before I switched food) but that's vacuumed at each water change. I've gone back to Spectrum and everybody's happy again.

I suppose the New Era grazers would be very good for huge tanks with enough fish to eat each day's disk before it disintegrated, but in my home system it was an unmitigated disaster.

i use grazer food stick on rings and cichlid pellets, fish are loving them.
almost every fish comes and attacks the grazer stick ons and rest love the pellets, well pleased with them
