Can anyone please give me very simple instructions to set up my new Eheim 2215 canister filter - it has an instruction book but its now very clear! Theres tubing to cut ect and I am a total novice with external filters!!

Do I need another pair of hands to do this (my daughter's) or is it a one person job....

Thanks Julie

what is it youre having problems with?

if you have the double taps basicly what you need to ddo is cut a short length off of each hose , fit the pieces of hose each end of the taps , the short end of the hose connects to the filter , the long lengths feed into the tank. you will need to suck on the intake hose to start the syphon

step by step

fit taps to hoses
connect outlet hose to filter
suck on intake hose to start syphon then close tap
connect hose to filter
open taps , cannister should fill
once filled switch filter on

Many many thanks, you've made it sound simple! all I've done so far is take it all out the box and look at the different components..but will follow your instructions and hopefully my new filter will be up and running tomorrow
:good:

no worries , its exactly the same to set up as my 2217s if you get stuck give me a shout

Hi Mark (and his fish lol)

I have the Eheim running in the tank - did it this afternoon and all going well at the moment, I put all the media from the old filter into the Eheim and also some biomax on the bottom tray.

I am a little concerned about the pipes going into the tank, I have pushed the spray bar and intake pipe into the tubing as far as I can, but don't want to get up one morning to 125 litres of water on my wood floor! there appears to be a 'groove' on the pipes so I am trusing that they won't come adrift. I have also put the green half moon shaped bit onto the spray bar pipe to hold it firmly as it curves into the tank, I assume this is what it is for.

Just one more thing, is the spray bar designed to go under the water or above it? there seems to be more water movement with the bar below the water line, but I do like the bubbles I must admit....maybe its a matter of choice?

I had an Interpet PF4 in the tank before this Eheim and I am amazed..within half an hour the water was crystal clear, which it wasn't with the PF4 - I was quite disapointed with it to be honest.

Thanks again for your advice and help, once I read your instructions and got my head round it had no problems at all, would have been a little easier if my daughter hadn't pinched my Stanley Knife..... lol
Thanks again, regards Julie

hi julie , no worries happy to help , glad you got it rubbing smoothly. if you have pushed the hoses on as far as that little groove they will be fine . the best place to put your spraybar is just under teh waters surface , aimed so that it makes little ripples on the water surface. this surface agitation helps oxygenate the water

Hi Mark.....all done, spray bar in the right position now - cheers, your help much appreciated!

Regards Julie

Morning Mark

All well in the tank, really good water flow and it all looks very clean - I do have a bit of a jungle in there with real plants, so I'm very pleased with the filter. Just one question, do you find you need a pre-filter sponge on the intake pipe? I have young Platinum Tetras, Neon Tetras and Mosquita Rasboras who tend to swim along the back of the tank in the water flow, little concerned they will disappear up the pipe even though it has a cage round it.
Also how often do you clean your 2217 out? I read online its not necessary for around 6 months (seems a long time) - except for changing the carbon of course-it said on the box to change that every 2 weeks, but I feel it will last around 4 weeks..then I'm going to put a bag of carbon in.

Hope you can give me your advice on this last couple of things....regards and thanks again, Julie :)

how often you need to clean them out will be entirely dependant on your stocking levels etc . i run 2 2217s on my tank and i clean them out every month , they could easily go longer than that but i like to know theyre nice and clean .

as for the carbon unless you need to remove meds from the water i wouldnt bother with it , i would use the space for extra bio media instead .

if the small fish you have are small enough to go through the intake strainer then yes id say the pre filter sponge on the intake would be a wise move . this will also serve to increase your maintainence intervals as most of the crud will get caught by the prefilter .

many thanks Mark, I will get a pre-filter sponge or put some sponge round it until I do get one. I can only see 5 Mosquito Rasboras and there were 7, so unless they are hiding in the jungle somewhere looks like I've lost 2 already so best do something quick.

My stocking levels are only 70% so I will clean the filter out every month or so, like you I need to know its clean.

You have really helped Mark, and I do appreciate it....regards Julie

Mark, sorry to send you another message...!

There appears to be far too much water flow in the tank now, the Gouramis are hiding at the bottom and the rest of the fish are being blown everywhere - how do I reduce the flow a bit? I guess its positioning of the spray bar, but which way...I could go and try to do it but would rather know what I am doing first....lol

Hi, I can safely say that the Eheim 2215 I have just bought is almost silent..my tank is in the lounge and I can actually turn the TV down! I had a PF4 in before and it was driving me mad with all the noise it made. Just a thought I actually bought my Eheim off ebay for £69.99 with free postage, it arrived 2 days later by courier-if he has any left it was a real bargain compared to the shops. :good:
