Hey folks,

Probably an easy one for most of you folks but here's my dilemma.

I want to start a discus tank. 55 gallons. I've kept discus before with good results.

I've moved since then and my question concerns the water that I have.

The water for the whole house is well water run through a softening treatment that uses salt. The pH is above 8.

What should I do to the water to get it ready for fish?

Thanks

Sean

I would say either Reverse Osmosis or a ion exchange filter are your only options if you want an easy life :)

RO is expensive to purchase and you need to replace membranes every so often, ion exchange isnt as expensive to start off, but the cost builds up and is far higher than RO in the end.

The pH would be a worry, but not a show stopper, the salt softener I know nothing about but sounds ominous :) How else is the water treated? I would feel nervous about using well water in a Discus tank unless is was well filtered and boiled first.
