hello, i got a 35litre tank, which had been set up with filter, light, gravel, plastic plants, etc. it stood for about a week. we went to local fish shop, we brought one black moor fish. we had him for about a week and a bit, he looks fine and eats well, but i am worried now because i have been reading about the nitrogen cycle. i have no test kits. i do do 50 - 75% water changes every other day. will this be ok. its done every other day because i have to leave the water to stand, so that it is declouranted.

Ok, before everyone gets at you; the tank isn't suitable for the fish (long term); the fish will get too big for the tank.

Do you have a filter in the tank?

I'd suggest trying to get a test kit (try e-bay), so you can test at home as and when you want; or alternatively you can take a water sample to a shop and they'll do it for you (most of the chain stores next to me do it free, however the smaller ones you have to pay; and I think they charge 50p per test).

how long do you recon i could keep him in there for before he started to get to big, and how big a tank would he need, also accounting for a couple of telescopic fish as well, they look nice. is there anything i could do to help keep him healthy in the small tank. i do 50 to 25% water changes every other day, is this ok, or should i do it more often. he only a inch at the moment. i am so annoyed my local pet shop said he would be fine in there.

he does have a filter, it came with the tank its a Classica 200l/h power filter, it even pumps bubbles into the tank, and from what i understand that increases the water surface area, therefore allowing more oxygen to transfer into the water, and carbon out.

i will let you know my test result asap, hopefully tumers do it, but they have a really bad rep, but its the only one i can get to during my lunch hour.

this is a picture of my new black moor goldfish, he only a inch long, and loves his new tank, we upgraded him to a 80litre. i waiting for my api freshwater master test kit. it should be here soon.
