New canister filter issue

I would say if getting all of those extra organics out of there doesn't start to solve the problem in a couple of weeks, and you suspect diatom causing silicates....Maybe you could call your local water supply to see if they've changed something? Maybe somehow extra silicates are in the water. Who knows?

Good idea. Im on a well I forget others arent. You may be able find your water report online.
Hopefully you don't live in Flint Mi

Silicates should not be an issue anyway. I have the Seachem PhosGuard in the filter and it is supposed to remove phosphates and silicates.

This goes back to my thread of " about to give up"...I just can't figure out the issue, and seriously am just about to give up on that. I honestly am beginning to think that there is nothing I can do about it. I really thought this new canister filter would help because of superior filtration, but that part goes with this thread, it does not seem to be superior to the HOB at all in filtration. Not even with the PhosGuard and the Purigen in it, it is not really doing anything for the tank water that the cheap HOB didn't do. But then again, it may not be the lack of filtration, it may be something else entirely that I have just not figured out yet.

Ive never had a filter that removed diatoms. Ive only used phosguard in reefs so I cant say. I can say that ive seen people struggle up to the first year with diatoms.

How bad is it. Are plants covered

They are not covered right now. I rubbed it all off. The diatom filter can filter out diatoms. And it does an excellent job. I just hate to the have thing always sitting in front of my tank. This tank is 9 years old. I have had one issue like this years ago. Dont know what started it then or what ended it. Funny thing is, I never remember having diatoms at all when the tank was a newly set up tank. That is just weird to me.

I am going to do really intense tank cleaning every week for a few weeks and see if that helps. I can say at least that the BBA is gone

Try try not to give up. I know it's hard. Most algae people get either come in as spores on plants or they are just floating around in the air. It can't be avoided. The only thing we can do is to get out tanks balanced so that, if planted, the plants take up everything so algae can't grow, and if not, we don't have the type of lighting that can help it grow in the first place.

Balance is the key and it can be very hard to achieve.

Yes I was speaking of regular canister or hob. Something in chemistry changed. Unfortunately that dont help much. Ive kept tanks about 30yrs. Ive had tanks that never got them had one lasted a year. Obviously sand tanks and rock with phosphates will typically last longer. I do think light/photo period during bloom affects longevity. Most disagree. I like studying algae when im bored lol. Stay in fight I promise youll win.
