I thought it was common knowledge that Rams were fragile and to risk their health in a tank that will likely have ammonia/ammonium and nitrite spikes would be irresponsible.

I would say you are very lucky to have a good supplier of well-bred and hardy Rams, something of a rarity these days with the general over-breeding one tends to find.

I strongly advise less experienced and more than likely, less lucky fishkeepers to avoid your methods of cycling a tank. Fishless cycling is far more humane, whether it be using chemicals or plants.
