I keep going to Wal-mart (I'm very proud of this one. Very well kept fish) and I always go past the tanks. (of course!) Well, for two weeks there had been this very, very plain boy there. He's yellow with some green/blue in this fins. I knew nobody was going to want him, because he isn't one of those flashy bettas. I was getting a new holding tank for when I clean the others, because I...'borrowed' my friends guppies. (I didn't steal! ^o_o^ His kid kept...fishing in it and sailing his armada (Give him a break, he's 3)) But, yes...I got the plain boy, and nearly cried when I saw the employee fretting over another betta.

Apparently, what had happened was that a couple of kids (Jr. High probably) decided it would be fun to take two cups to another part of the store and ...fight the bettas. One of them didn't make it. :byebye: But the guy that was working there had put the cup away and was going to take the survivor home and nurse him back to health. I looked at him and -all- of his fins were ripped to bits, all very very close to his body with single shreds here and there. He's a great employee. I went and hunted down the manager and told her how impressed I was about this.

It does my heart good to know that some employees actually care.

So yes, now I am home with my mundane fish and a wonderful feeling of cheerfulness.

(And yes, I would have gotten the injured boy too, were I not sure he would be well taken care of.)

That is a very sad story, but it does have a relatively happy ending. It's good to know an employee cares so much to take home a hurt Betta.

And people of just about every age do put Bettas together. I've seen college-age boys do it at Petsmart, and brag that they do it all the time because it's funny.

I wouldn't be surprised if your "plain" boy turned into something very, very lovely. It's quite common for the ugliest Betta in the place to turn out to be a real beauty.

That's terrible about the fight. :( Some people are so cruel. Honestly, have they got nothing better to do than purposely injure fish? I hate people like that... go watch a boxing match if you're hungry for violence. :p

Anyway, congrats on the new boy! :D What are you going to call him?

That was really great of the employee to take home that injured one. I wish the staff at my LFS were more like that...

I know of a couple of my friend that do that.......Its apparently a real blast. I've never gone out on one of there excursions, and never will.

I think I'm gonna name him Pearl, thats what his colors remind me of at the moment but I will wait another few days to see how much his color will change. =3 Or maybe I will name him Tama (Japanese for Jewel/Gem I believe) which will work if his colors keep getting darker.

He's very very placid, scared me half to death last night because he didn't move for lik...5 minutes. xD He was fine though, I think he was napping. He doesn't want to flare at Phred [Blue and red CT] (My BF named him, lol. He's getting into the obsession too as Phred and my new boy are at his house now *snicker*) but I think that may be 'new tank syndrome'.

Does anybody else's boys just kinda hang out for the first week or so? All of mine did, is it normal?

The green on his tail is getting more vibrant and his body is getting more color too, so I think he's going to wind up as one of my prettier boys. <3 Not the any of my boys are ugly, they're all lovely.

Yeah, that's normal for them to just kind of hang around for the first week or so. It's hard for Bettas to adjust to a new home sometimes.

Good, I was kinda worried that I was doing something wrong. :dunno: I try to be as careful as possible when acclimating them to the new water and temperature.

I guess I'm just a worrywart Mommy.

Being a worrywart mother is MUCH better than being a lax, "oh, he'll get over it on his own" mother. This way, you actually notice strange things, and can help not only prevent disease, but can also catch it in early stages.
