It's just brown algae growing on the dead coral skeleton. If you don't like it, take the coral outside and hose it off. Then put it back in the tank.

Out of curiosity, what fishes do you keep in the tank?
Coral skeleton can raise the pH and if you have fish like neon tetras that come from acid (pH below 7.0) water, the coral can make it higher than that.

What is the GH (general hardness), KH (carbonate hardness) and pH of your water supply?
This information can usually be obtained from your water supply company's website or by telephoning them. If they can't help you, take a glass full of tap water to the local pet shop and get them to test it for you. Write the results down (in numbers) when they do the tests. And ask them what the results are in (eg: ppm, dGH, or something else).

I thought this was a marine thread. You really shouldn't have coral in a fresh water aquarium.

You need live plants with neons and lots of them. Between 30 - 50% of the tank volume in live plants.

Thanks for comments. I have tested the water weekly and has maintained PH at 7.0 range. Our water here In Utah is hard but my water has stayed stable. Will clean coral off, and continue watching PH. Love the look so much having a hard time considering take it out.

I have 6 neon tetras, 1 ballon bellie molly, 2 sunburst platys, 2 male guppies, another type of black mollie, and 3 red minor tetras. I have only lost one ballon Molly and a neon tetra after 2 months and that one had it’s fin bitten off. It’s a 30 gal tank.

I have asked the question but I do know that our water supply is very hard to hard with a measurement of 28-30 GPG.
