Hi guys...
My first post here, but after browsing around the net, I thought this community appeared the most friendly and informative...so I decided to pose my question to you all. I purchased two bettas two days ago on Thursday. I have them both in a 2.5 gallon tank with a divider down the middle.
One of the bettas is doing just fine. He seems full of energy, although his appetite isn't great yet. I suppose that may be a change in food and will just wait a day or so then try feeding again.
The second however, was somewhat active the first day. Yet has gotten increasingly lethargic, generally resting in the top corner of his side of the tank where the water current holds him near the surface. He will sometimes sink to the bottom, but generally if left alone will just float. His fins are mostly clamped and doesn't flare up at his neighbor...mostly choosing to ignore him.
I've done as much research as I can on the net...he doesn't seem to have the white spots of ich or the fuzz of velvet. Neither fish is brilliantly colored along their sides, although the active one has shown some improvement and shimmers quite well now. I've used water conditioner, a pH balancer, and even reduced the current in the tank. None seem to change his behavior. He also refuses to eat.
Scared that he might infect the more active fish, I've now isolated the lazy one, and he seems content to just sit around in the smaller bowl. He swims around a bit, but is not very active. He still exhibits no outward signs of any of the illnesses I've found described on the net.
I apologize for the manifesto, but hope I've adequately portrayed the situation. Should I keep him separated or return him to the larger tank? Has any infection likely already spread to the other fish? Should I treat both with something, and if so, what? Thanks so much for any information or suggestions you might have!
