While doing stuff on the computer with my husband, I glanced to my left and saw a new baby darting around. That, of course, prompted me to go on a "baby hunt" with the net, trying to move the babies into the breeder box so they wouldn't get eaten.

There are now four babies in the breeder box with some riccia to hide in and swim amongst.

I think one is dead, but I'm not sure. It gave me a run for my money when I was trying to catch it, and it darted between the edge of the net and the aquarium glass. So I don't know if the poor thing got smooshed to death, or if it just got stunned. I'm hoping stunned, honestly.

At the moment, I'm not sure if they are platies (which would mean that the new Mickey Mouse was pregnant when I got her) or mollies. We recently caught one of the mollies that we THOUGHT was female chasing the new black balloon molly female, with gonopodium in full sight. So it either changed, which a couple of people have told me that mollies WILL do in an all female tank, or the poor guy wasn't very well endowed, as we say. So I named him Stumpy LOL.

As the babies get bigger, and it becomes more apparent what type they are, I'll update. They're cute! :D

congrates on the fry.i just love fry.i can sit and watch them for hours.good luck with them.i had two sailfin mollys that came to maturation very late.i thought they were females.they are now quite well endowed now though.

Thanks!

The fourth baby is in fact alive ... I can see its tail wiggling quickly. (too quickly to be disturbed by the itty bitty current that makes it into the breeding box.) It just likes to spend most of its time hiding in the riccia.

Although the riccia is too frustrating to have in the main portion of the tank (it doesn't stay at the top in one spot, it gets ALL OVER at all levels of the water and clogs up the filter), it does quite nicely in the breeder box.

Now there is an adopted pond snail (our second attempt to adopt one of my mother's pond snails for my son ... the first one got eaten because I released it into the main part of the tank too soon and one of the mollies gobbled it up) hanging out with the four babies, so should be a pretty good "cleanup" guy.

Now ONE person on an email list told me that mollies, platies and swordtails can all interbreed. I HAVE heard of swordtails and platies interbreeding, but that is the ONLY time I've EVER heard of mollies and platies interbreeding. I think that person is full of crap, because they also collectively labeled ALL livebearers as "fin munchers". So ... can mollies and platies interbreed? Or was I right in guessing that the guy who said it doesn't know jack?

Gratz on the babies :D
as for the idea of interbreeding, am not sure if i can happen, could be ineresting because i had guppys mollies and platties so if its true im going to have some ####ed up fish in my tank  i hope not, i just want big shaols of the 3 different types of fish! so i hope interbreeding is just a load of bull lol!

(am sure someone will prove me wrong on the next post :p )
