New Addition

Hi all,

I've been thinking of having a swap round for a while now, so today I took a trip to my LFS. I've not done a massive overhaul, quite the opposite actually...just added a single fish. Now my 90 gallon houses 2 BN plecs, a polleni and.... a Vieja Argentea.

I must admit, I went with the intention of getting another fish or a few dithers, so before I went I 'measured' the polleni. He measured from the tip of my middle finger to my wrist, so when looking at possible options I compared this to the size of fish at the LFS. I thought the argentea would be much to big for the polleni to cause any trouble, I was overconfident. When I got it home I realised the polleni was much bigger than I had thought, when he swam over to the argentea I honestly thought he's gonna get gobbled . Funny thing is, the argentea just charged at the polleni, easy tripple his size and swam round him. Things seem to be going well, no aggression or anything. They've shared a cube of bloodworm and I expect to see the argentea in the morning

Best thing is, totally free. Well, almost, my red cherry shrimp tank is very crowded, so I rang up the LFS before I went and see if they wanted any, I dropped 20 off, got £20 pound in credit. The argentea was marked up at £20 so it was just a straight swap.

I'll try and get pictures tomorrow, just settling in at the minute.

Wow nice fish I really really love Argentinas have you ever seen the huge one a guy called Lee Nutall has? It was in PFK this month such a beautiful fish

Yeah I've seen that one, hope mine turns out like that. I picked the one that swam straight up to the glass at the LFS and was showing the best colours, so I'm quitely confident I got a nice fish.

Awesome I love picking out cichlids at the shops its like buying a puppy you just know which one is right for you

Well, the little fella's still there. Things are going well, he's eaten some pellets and is currently rearranging the tank to his liking

Ok, I have pictures, they aren't the greatest as he's only been in the tank one night and like I said in my other post, my good camera isn't working. Its also very hard to get side on shots of the little guy, every time I come near the tank he rushes to the front to greet me.

First picture showing the polleni and argentea together, note the picture doesn't show the true size difference. The argentea is quite a bit smaller than the photo makes out.

Swimming over java moss (the only plant the polleni will leave alone).

Even though the pictures might not show it, I think he's got potential to be a good looking fish. Lovely iridescent blue's and violets when the light catches him.

Shroob, your first picture looks like a camera trick with your polleni. I can't work out if he's in front of the tube, behind it or what. He's in front, but his fine is somehow behind. I'm confused.

Ha ha, its no camera trick, or at least not an intentional one. I see what you mean though. Its not a tube either Its a dead vallis leaf twisted around (told ya java moss is the only plant the polleni leaves alone). From what I remember, the polleni was behind the leaf, comming under it. The position of the leaf actually goes from the back of the tank, to the front, so while it may look like its parallel to the camera, its slopping towards it.

The shot is also misleading in that it makes the polleni look smaller than it is, and the argentea bigger than it actually is.

Ahhhhhhh, i see. It makes sense now, and i can see how the vallis may be twisted in the camera, whereas i thought it was a solid air tube! Thats some grade A tom-foolery right there.

Will be interesting to see how this fella matures
