Sued? Do you mean the site being sued or the person (like me) who talks about how bad a certain store is? And what could we be sued for? Slander? Wouldn't that require us to be lying about the store instead of spreading the news about how horrible the conditions are for animals? I don't want to get anyone (or this site) in trouble with lawsuits but I don't see the problem with giving people knowledge about bad places to buy fish.

Wal-Mart here is the same. I complained about the fact that for every 3 fish I bought, I developed ich and died after the 72 hour warranty they have. AND, there is only (usually) one person in the department who is knowledgable about fish. The rest are college students that aren't interested in fish. (No offence to college students. I know they need the money.)

i saw the topic of this thread, and i just neeed to say my thoughts.
When we were on an escapade to find plants, just days ago, we went to all of the places we knew, that sold fish, and walmart happened to be one of them. They had mainly guppies and goldfish and mollies, and ofcourse, neons. what appalled me, was the big filter they had on the corner of the tank, that happened to show about 3 dozen dead neons stuck to the filter., all in different stages of decomp. Mortified, in complete discust, I ran out of the store. I do not know why they would allow this... this is in plain view.

I agree with aquanut. i know there are quite a few ppl around this forum who live around me (miami fl), but yesterday and friday i was at a local petsmart on 40th st. (bird road) and i swore i would never go back again.. besides the fact there were at least 3 dead fish per tank, the guy there was just so ignorant and cocky, we were about ready to scrap right there in the store. its quite a long story, but i caught him telling my dad a bunch of crap, and i explained the guy was very confused when it came to why my little brothers fish died, and he jsut insisted, and became offended when i presented evidence that concluded that his theories were incorrect. it was as simple as my brother changing the water and not letting the fish become acclimated to the temperature, and he was trying to get my dad to buy a bunch of stuff 
anyway.. as far as walmart goes... i hate walmart personally because its just SO crowded.. the fish are OK in my walmart tho. oh well, on that same street with the petsmart theres at LEAST 4 other real stores with professional ppl.

i am gladmy wal-mart does not sell life fish. but i only have 1 fish store in 50 miles of me and the 1 i do have that is close's to me has the same problem wal-mart has all young kides working there that don't know a guppy from a neon

WalMart is more of the same. The lives of the fish are the least of their concerns. Fish are merely merchandise to them. That's simply a fact.
What I would like to talk about in this post are the business practices that helped make WalMart the giant it is today. Perhaps some of the younger members of this forum do not know its history. It grew by setting up stores in rural areas in the US (like Idaho and Louisiana). It would under price the local merchants and put them out of business. Then, of course, if the locals wanted to purchase something there was no other place to buy it for miles.
Yes, I have very strong feelings about the importance of supporting the small independant pet and fish shops. Not because I don't like large impersonal corporations, but because it makes sense. (And, no, I do not own one!)
It is also a pleasure to be waited on by someone who wants to make you a happy customer and who will special order an item if he doesn't normally carry it, or try to find a particular kind of fish that you want, or look up information for you.
And pleasure is what having a hobby is all about.

I hear that now this "giant" is putting the mom and pop service stations out of business with cheap fuel at their "giant" owned stations. This gasoline venture is what pushed them over the top and made them the largest corporation in the world.

We have not nor will we ever by fish from Malwart. In both of their Superstores in town there is no one who is even in charge of that department. I've spent time on that aisle and not once has anyone asked if they could help me or if I wanted a fish.
I've asked management at both locations and they have totally got an I don't give a care attitude.
And I too hate going there because its so crowded and takes forever just to get a gallon of milk.

Usually I have at least one person come up and ask me if I need help when I'm in the fish department, but the last few weeks, they haven't come up to me once. And I'm usually there for 10 minutes or more.
