how many neons could go in a 10g tank?and what are a good fish that could go with them without killing them?

cories go good with neons. neons are fairly susceptible to disease and stress and cories are low stress fish. they also both live in the amazon.

or you cold get a few ottos to keep the algae under control but ottos are also fairly sensitive fish but are also from the amazon basin like cories and neons.

wasnt it the other way around? i thought cardinals were harder to keep. my neons did fine when i didnt even cycle(which was before i knew about cycling)

If I were starting out and wanted a small school of smaller fish I'd have to go with the zebra danios too. ;) What they lack in color, they definately make up for in activity. :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

I cycled my tank with 6 bloodfin tetras and I lost none of them until my Blue Acara started to snack on them.....I would stay away from neons especially if it's a new tank....they are a pretty sensitive fish and the same goes for cardinals...your going to keep your tank in tip top shape to keep this guys happy....shouldn't be hard if you keep up with the maintenance.....

i agree! when still a newby and thinking that i could get all my research from lfs, i bought 6 neons for my uncycled tank, a week later, i bought someguppies and the woman accidentally caught a cardinal but let me have it for free, saying that it would be fine with the neons alone, it died that night...

Zebra danios need tanks larger than 10 gallons, I believe..
you belive correctly

due to the level of activity ZD's need a lot of
swimming room and way more than 10 gallons.

Strawberry
consider White cloud mountain minnows for such a
small tank, a school of 8 would be ok.

highall~
my experience, with neons have been excellent. I started a 10g with 3 bloodfins and 2 neons, all have done extre, ely well, recently i added 2 glo lites. Ive never found difficulty with the neons. good luck in what you choose!

I've had no problems with my neons either. I added 5 into my tank after I had completed the fishless cycle. Everyone of them is still alive and happily swimming about, thats approaching one year now.

They are actually in a tank along with zebra danios, and yes zebra danios are fun to watch. But I read on some websites not to put neons and danios together :dunno:

When it comes to feeding time, my neons are up fighting for the food beside the danios.

I must have hardy little neons :flex:

I cycled a new 33 gallon tank with 10 neons some 6 months ago and I still have the same 10 neons who are doing wonderfully well. I think they are a hardier fish than most are given them credit for.

I cycled my tank (90ltr) with 6 platies and after 2 weeks when my nitrite was back to zero I added a school of 14 neons. They are doing fantastically well, they have grown very quickly and are strong swimmers and feeders and I even saw them spawning the other day but the rummy noses were following them and eating the eggs. I would also say they are a lot hardier than people give them credit for, and in my opinion a good starter fish.

Chill, Mark.

I wouldn't consider neons to be all that delicate, although they do require good water quality to thrive. Before I knew better, I cycled a 33 gal tank with 16 neons. Five months later I have 14, all doing great. The only two lost were euthanized after displaying signs of what I suspect was NTD about 3 months ago.
