Hi People,

Whats the minimum number of neons one should have in a tank?

I always see them in schools of 10 or more, but is it ok to have just 2 or 3?

Are neon tetras fairly fragile fish to have? I would like to have some in my other 10 gallon tank but I had always thought they're fairly hard to keep alive.

Yes neons and cardinals are both very fragile fish, it is difficult to get them past the preliminary stage when you introduce them. After that you are fine. I would suggest to have at least 6; they should not be kept in pairs or trios. I myself lost my school of 6 cardinals this weekend after being in my tank for only a day.

I bought 6, 2 died since then. The remaining 4 seem to be doing ok though. But in case you loose some, you should get at least 6...

I keep hering how hard these fish can be to keep alive. I bought 5 Black Neon's and they are all still striving. There are in a 10 gallon tank alone right now, but I've had them for over 3 weeks and all seem fine. Are the Black Neons a harder fish? I fell in love with them at the LFS and got five and thinging of adding 5 more.

Yes, black neons are much hardier than regular neons. I had several of them too, and they were great.

Yeah I use to have two black Neons until One when right next to the outtake on the filter and it shot him rite into the wall. He died instantly. I feel so bad :-( . The other one disapeared. My fish always seem to disapear. argh

Yes I hear that black neons are less sensitive. But remember once they are acclimatized, I don't think they are that sensitive any more. All remaining neons are now very healthy and hardy...

cardinals are supposed to be hard to keep? lol. .who knew? Guess i've been lucky. Orginally bought 5.. they seemed happy enough but after a few weeks a bought 5 more. Now the 10 school together and it's soooo pretty to watch. Had them now for over 2 months.. haven't lost any yet! *knock on wood*

Your tank condition must be good and your stock must have been a good one as well. I've read experiences where someone kept purchasing and just about all died. He stopped purchasing after killing about 20 of them. Other fishes have been fine in his tank for years!

i only bought 4, and they have lasted for two weeks now just fine
in the store, they said they should be kept in groups of 4-5 and up
