Added a dozen new neon to the tank yesterday and so far all they seem to do is sit at the bottom in a corner looking at their reflections in the glass. Is this normal or will they actually go for a swim at any stage? Vain little critters!!

They're likely stressed from bagging and transport. Give them a few days to settle in and hopefully they'll perk up. You got a good number, which definitely helps them feel secure.

Thanks Corleone. The fish were 10 for €10 but guy gave me the dozen. I was actually thinking about getting another tenner's worth tomorrow to be honest.

You've been given good advice so far and here's some more.....

Not too many fish at once unless you have JUST completed a fishless cycle. If you haven't then give it a few days and test your water for ammonia/nitrite, if not at zero then no more fish for you yet!

Oh, btw they are not looking at their reflection. They can see through the tank, you can see their reflection as you are looking in from outside the tank and they are looking out from the inside. If you don't believe me then stick your head in the tank and see....... Aww, I'd pay to see that!

*edit* typo

Yup, perpendicular surfaces looking through water will reflect perfectly (ideally anyway)

i think that neons are a waiste of money my personal opinion.. every time i add some to the tank they either die the next day or just get sick and die....
so bad news but this is what i found out...
and i have added neons about 10 times. sam result every time

yes neons are very sensitive to ammonia and nitrite, providing the tank is cycled and mature and of course you buy good quality stock you should be fine.

Thanks for that (**dries off head**).

Seriously though, my LFS recommended starting with neons and adding after a few days. It's a new tank that has been fully cycled and the numbers are good. I have now turned the light back off and will leave it off for a day or two. They seem quite happy now with the light off and making themselves at home now so fingers crossed. I'll probably add a new 'friend'for them on Saturday.

Thanks for all your advice guys. I'm sure I'll be pestering you for more in due course :)

Unusual for a LFS to recommend neons for a 'virgin tank' cycled or not. Around here a lot of them check that you have had your tank running for at least 6 weeks before selling you neons, (and from what I've learnt on here some people say even up to 6 months). Apparently it seems the neons can be sensitive to something we don't know about and don't test for. Although the test results all come back good, people have reported problems with neons in tanks that have only recently finished their cycle. 6 months on and adding neons seems to be no problem.

Yes, agree exactly with this statement. Could be a "virgin" LFS employee, they come in all age categories even, usually they've been taught what a net looks like and how to use the cash register.

Wow, bad advice! Most other tetras, but not neons or cardinals. Lemon tetras maybe? I have 6 x-ray tetras in my tank now to start things off, and they're getting bactinetts & used filter media, plus a heavily planted tank.

I'd be interested to see the outcome. Maybe you could bag them up and return to LFS whilst they're still alive and get some hardier tetras?

Edit: I misread and thought you were cycling the tank with the fish in. My bad. =)
