Never thought of Grassmere - I'll give them a look-in  The head office where I work is in Cambridgeshire and I popped into Peterborough Water Zoo this week - that looked really good but a bit of a distance to get fish regularly from!
Maybe you could come and help me with my fish ;)
Can't decide if you said that cos I'm local, or looking at my last post, whether it read as if I worked in aquatics, it could read like that! Sorry if it did :*) , my experience with fish is only in my own tanks - had a community FW for a few years, then had marines for quite a long time. About to start afresh with a new planted FW tank. So I'm no expert but I'm obviously not far from you if you ever do want a hand with anything :) PM/email me anytime if you like!

>>> i guess an hour is kinda far to go for fish

:) I regulaly used to drive several hours on fish expeditions. Would plan a shop tour based on previous visits, resommendations and articles I'd read. Leave early, 6-8 shops, arrive back late.

A couple of times a year, I would take the car ferry to Holland to tour shops there. Happy days.

Two words...Chain Store! They don't really take care of their fish...mostly go by the theory that if they get in bulk they will make up for the loses. Seen so many sad cases at Petco and Petsmart! Sure they are cheaper and have a great selection for the most part...but you gotta consider quality also. Most LFS will work with you on ordering the fish that you want if you just talk to them about it! Sorry about your neons! Hope no more die!

Four of the six are still alive and they all have voracious appetites.

I agree with what you said about chain stores, but I don't have very many options. Their fish aren't always bad, either. These were the only fish I got from petsmart that died when I got it. I had a cory that died (tank wasn't fully cycled) and a crab that died (I was never told that I needed land for them), but that's about it. They had sold all their neons the time before (all 100 of them in one day), so the manager got more to make sure he wouldn't run out.

As for special orders, the pet care manager is willing to do that for me, especially with fish that his store doesn't have.
