So I have just got 10 new neon tetras a week ago. 1 has already died, and another one has mouth fungus! I went to my local pet supplies store and they gave me a small bottle of fungus cure. My neon hasn't changed one bit! My some of my other neons look stressed,I check out the PH and such of my local creek water, we use that as it's good for the fish. I use the same water for my swordtails, and they have even had a baby and absolutely no deaths since I got them! Also, the fungus is sort of INSIDE my neon's mouth, to the left. It can't close it's mouth, I noticed this yesterday, and I keep a GOOD watch on my fish since they're in my bed room. Also, the fish is with my other neons, because I have no tank that I can use for medication!(My medication tank has a crack in it)I also have shrimp. Would the medication harm them?

Sorry if I sound over worried, it's just that all of my guppies died not long ago from ammonia, I don't want that to happen with my neons. [size]

EDIT: Just because it says newbie doesn't mean I'm new to fishkeeping.

How long has your tank been set up?

About a week and a half, actually. We use water aging stuff so that it cycles faster. However, I cleaned it out not entirely, just did a big water change and rearranged the plants and decor. Also added a filter. Also, in case you are curious, apparently the shop I buy from quarantines it's fish. My swortail's tank hasn't been cleaned in ages, though. Currently my neons are living in my old guppy tank.

Your tank is uncycled, you've proven as much from your guppy deaths and the fact you "added a filter". A filter should be there from the beginning! I suspect this water aging stuff you used is this bacteria in a bottle type of product that everyone around here is so suspicious of (you'd be hard pushed to find someone on this forum who's had any results from it). You should go over to My New Freshwater Tank and read the Beginner's Resource Centre, specifically, the stuff on cycling, it will save you a lot of heartache in the end.

Neons are well known for not doing very well in new tanks, so an uncycled tank really won't be doing them much good. Do you have a test kit? If I were you, I'd make testing your water an immediate priority. This fungus may kill the neon. However, if you've got ammonia in your tank (which I suspect you probably will), it could (and probably will) kill all of your fish.

My guppies died from ammonia because my mom changed the tank while I was at school and she put the guppies in too early. The guppies were doing fine without a filter at the time, because we didn't have enough pwerpoints to connect a second filter then so we didn't have any choice... My mom also put this aging stuff in there and DIDN'T tell me until now mind you :/. I already read the cycling article when I got my first tank (a long while back mind you) ;)( I just set up my swordtail tank then so I could cycle that one fine). . However, about the neons, I have a test kit, but it only tests PH :X . If I can, ASAP I want to get a proper one for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, most likely today or tommorrow, I don't want to wait too long at all! But yeah, the guppies really weren't my fault. The neons, on the other hand, I'll try my best to save them.

I'm on summer holidays now, so I'll have plenty of time to concentrate on my tanks. ;)

I dont know much about the fungus tbh, but hopefully someone will help you. I just want to point out that there are no fish which are fine in an unfiltered tank. If you say they were fine you were either doing daily water changes or you just weren't seeing the damage that was being done to them.

My guess in my extremely limited knowledge is that the neon has cut itself somehow and it's now got infected, but don't take my word for it.

As for whether the meds will harm your shrimp, you need to find out whether it has copper in it (copper is highly poisonous to them). You'll then need to either remove the shrimp or find alternative medication, though the ideal situation would be to just remove the infected neon and treat it separately. Assuming you have a spare filter and heater, you don't need a proper tank for quarantine, just any watertight container of suitable size.

You are correct,my neons were chasing and fighting each other heaps a few days ago. as for a spare heater and filter, I live in the tropics so the temp is perfect for them, however a spare filter I do not have. It doesn't tell you whether the medication has copper or not, but it probably doesn't, as the only two things it tells you are in it are one of the treatment fluids/items and green dye. I have no clue why it has green dye, but it doesn't harm the fish one bit, as the staff from my equipment supplier told me. However, on the other hand, I doubt my other fish will be infected if I treat them all.
