Hello there, I'm new, so forgive me for any errors.
Today one of my Neon Tetras died. I suspected he had NTD, he showed all the signs, but the odd thing was this has been going on for over 6 months.
I bought him, with some other neons over 6 months ago to add to my community tank of a plecky, clown loach, red tailed shark, 3 danios, a guppy, and a few other tetras (lemon, glowlight, rummy nose) Since then one lemon and the guppy died suddenly with no symptoms, and a baby molly I raised has been added along with a silver tip.
The reason I kept this poorly Neon in my tank was because I only started to suspect NTD when his spine started to curl which was about 3 weeks ago and I believe it was too late for the others. The neon was always a bit odd, I never thought anything of it actually, his red just seemed a little bit lighter than the other neons when I got him. Over the months he started to get worse and when his spin started to curve that's when I started to panic.
I didn't have the heart to put him down, and I don't have anyone I could have taken him to, so I felt instead of stressing him out putting him into another tank by himself, I'll let him live the rest of his life with his fish friends.
I kept a very close eye on him to take him out as soon as he died so none of the fish would get at him when he did die. Unfortunately I stayed at my dads last night and only got back dinner time today to find my darn plecky has eaten almost all the fish. I have instantly quarantined the plecky as I know he will be fine by himself, but I'm very worried about him now as I love the plecky to bits.
The thing is, with all the time this poorly tetra has been in the main tank, none of the other fish has showed any signs of illness. In fact, they have never looked so healthy!
I did try the Neon with various treatments, (fin rot, white spot etc) and nothing was helping him. I feel so bad that I couldn't get him out all whole the poor thing, I had no idea the plecky would eat him. I was suspecting my loach or shark to have a good nibble. Which they might have done, but my quarantine tank is too small for them.
All water is good, I check regularly and filtration is all good. I mean, like I said, they have never looked so healthy and happy before. I have been keeping some of these fish a couple years now and I have grown very attached to my Loach, Shark, baby Molly and the silver tip tetra who's immune system is not great but is doing so well (Im proud of this little guy).
So any basically I want to know how long NTD takes before it kills its victim, this has been going on for over 6 months. Can pleckys get NTD? In fact, what fish cants get NTD?
