I am a little confused about the whole neon tetra disease thing... so i have a question... can the disease only be formed on a neon tetra? If so, can it be tranfered to other species of tetra? If so, can it be tranferred to other species of fish in general?

For example, if i have neon tetras in a tank with silver dollar tetras, danios, and freshwater angels, would the silver dollars be able to catch the disease off of a diseased neon tetra? How about the danios? how about the angels?

Can neon tetra disease only form/start on neon tetras, or can they start on other fish too?

Most importantly, how common is this disease?

Sorry i am asking so many questions, but i have 8 neons and 5 cardinals... and im pretty worried that this disease may kill off my tank someday

Neon Tetra Disease is a total misnomer as it can be caught by many species, not just tetras either, there are well documented cases of Rasboras, Barbs and Cichlids with sporozoan infestations.

The disease was really really rare until maybe 15 years ago when intensive farming with very poor hygiene began to spread it more widely. It is still a very uncommon disease.
