Hi all, first post.

I have just found 1 of my Neon Tetra's dead.

All the other fish seem OK, and the other neon does too.

Any ideas what could of happened? Are they hard to keep?

Cheers

Sorry but you'll need to post a lot more details before someone can reply to you. Like tank size, how long it's been set up, other fish in there, water readings etc.

Looking at your name, does that mean you live near Sunderland? If so, you are in a hard water area and Neon Tetra's do much better in soft water.

Yeah i do, I live in Hartlepool.

The tank size is 2 foot, and it's been set up about two weeks.

Other fish in are: 1 neon, 2 characins and 4 male guppys.

It's set to the correct temp (advice from the internet)

Did you cycle the tank? Look at http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=141944
for more info on that.

Also if your gonna keep Neon's then they should be kept in groups as they are a shoaling fish.

i have hard water and my neons do ok.

i did find that with nearly ALL of my tanks i get losses in the early stages of set up.

it could be just that

unless there is other symptoms you may have seen?

Neon tetra are not cycling fish and need mature tanks of 6 months.
Water changes and increase aeration.

The tank is most likely not cycled.

In an un-cycled tank, you are going to have high ammonia and nitrite issues.

Neon Tetras, NEED at least a 4-6+ month old established tank to live in. They cannot be exposed to ammonia/nitrite for too long or they, like you have experienced, die.

I cycled my tank with 4 neon tetras a year ago or so, and they are still happily alive! :D

You was lucky then as most neons don't survive cycling tanks. Not many fish do.

Yea I know. I didnt know that cycling with fish is so bad. I think I had read an old article, saying to cycle with fish. But if I did it again I would do a fishless cycle for sure :)

OMG, is it really true about the 4 - 6 month thing?! o_O; If so then I'm screwed, and so are my 4 neon tetras (3 of which I just bought ;) ).

I live in an area with pretty high pH water -- about 7.5 - 7.6 pH; somewhere in-between that. ;) My neons seemed to be fine, though; they USUALLY just die if I don't acclimate them properly.

OP - check out info on cycling tanks. A number of things could have killed them - an unseen parasite or bacterial infection, pH shock, ammonia or nitrites from the fish waste, bullying, stress . . .

Do you have a kit for testing chemicals in the water? If so, post your ammonia and nitrite readings. If you don't have one, you really need to get one. These are vital for fishkeeping.

Neon tetras need mature tanks - I found this out the hard way. Luckily, my three remaining neons survived the cycling process and now have 4 more friends, and they are doing great!

A pH of 7.5-7.6 is great. :good:

Okay! :D Thanks; I think the fish might have died when I used Nutrafin Cycle.... It doesn't do crap; it made my Betta fish all subdued for a few days and I guess the cardinals (which, well, I DID have, but they unfortunately died :( ) were rather sensitive to that. :(

Lols, when I asked the girl about the neon tetras at LFS (when I wanted to buy some), she was all like, "It's been up and running for at least a month, right?" and I'm all like, "Yeah. At *LEAST* since the beginning of August," and she's all like, "Good."

That's the best person I've ever seen at my LFS! :D She actually ASKED me. When I bought my first neon tetras in the middle of August, the people at PJ's Pets didn't ask me about crap. They just went like all happily, "Oh, here are your fish!!!!" and out of the 3 neon tetras I bought in the middle of August, only 1 is still alive; out of the 4 or 5 cardinal tetras and the 1 golden neon tetra I bought at the end of August ALL of them are dead, and out of the 3 neon tetras I just bought this evening all are still alive and happy and well so I think I might be doing good! ^^; :D ;) :good:

Sorry, I change me previous post.

I thought we were talking about how long it would take to cycle a tank, in which case it would take on average 4-6 weeks, but 4-6 month for an aquarium to safely handle neon tetras.
