Any ideas what could of happened? Are they hard to keep?

Sorry but you'll need to post a lot more details before someone can reply to you. Like tank size, how long it's been set up, other fish in there, water readings etc.
Looking at your name, does that mean you live near Sunderland? If so, you are in a hard water area and Neon Tetra's do much better in soft water.
The tank size is 2 foot, and it's been set up about two weeks.
Other fish in are: 1 neon, 2 characins and 4 male guppys.
It's set to the correct temp (advice from the internet)
Neon tetra are not cycling fish and need mature tanks of 6 months.
Water changes and increase aeration.
You was lucky then as most neons don't survive cycling tanks. Not many fish do.
OMG, is it really true about the 4 - 6 month thing?! ; If so then I'm screwed, and so are my 4 neon tetras (3 of which I just bought ).
I live in an area with pretty high pH water -- about 7.5 - 7.6 pH; somewhere in-between that. My neons seemed to be fine, though; they USUALLY just die if I don't acclimate them properly.

A pH of 7.5-7.6 is great.

Okay! Thanks; I think the fish might have died when I used Nutrafin Cycle.... It doesn't do crap; it made my Betta fish all subdued for a few days and I guess the cardinals (which, well, I DID have, but they unfortunately died ) were rather sensitive to that.
Lols, when I asked the girl about the neon tetras at LFS (when I wanted to buy some), she was all like, "It's been up and running for at least a month, right?" and I'm all like, "Yeah. At *LEAST* since the beginning of August," and she's all like, "Good."
That's the best person I've ever seen at my LFS! She actually ASKED me. When I bought my first neon tetras in the middle of August, the people at PJ's Pets didn't ask me about crap. They just went like all happily, "Oh, here are your fish!!!!" and out of the 3 neon tetras I bought in the middle of August, only 1 is still alive; out of the 4 or 5 cardinal tetras and the 1 golden neon tetra I bought at the end of August ALL of them are dead, and out of the 3 neon tetras I just bought this evening all are still alive and happy and well so I think I might be doing good! ^^;
