Hi
I have inherited a fish tank and one of the neon's looks humpbacked with a small balloon-type growth on its side. The growth is see thru almost.
It seems to be swimming along quite happily but something tells me this isnt right.
Years ago when I had a goldfish it had something like that - it then started swimming on its side and eventually went to fish heaven..
What shall I do ?

How many gallons is the tank.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

The growth does it look like its filled with fluid.
is the red stripe still vibrant red. Or does it look bleached out or a milky substance on the red stripe area.
is the spine bending.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing, excess mucas, laboured breathing or gasping, darting.

56 litre tank
6 neons, 1 plec
dunno stats jost obtained tank today - they in original tank water

cant really tell if its filled with fluid
not much of a stripe: more bleached out - in fact 3 of the neons are 'pale colour' like stripeless..
No signs of flicking or rubbing, mucus etc,
although swimming along quite happily - in comparison to its buddies its quite 'stiff' or rigid in its movement ?

You need to get water tested at lfs fast. Ask them to write the readings down for you.

For now water change and increase aeration.

Bleached out red stripe can be stress or ntd.

Difficulty in swimming can also be a sign of ntd.

Thanks very much for your advice and the link.
Have read it - looks like it is ntd.
Shall take fish AND water into my LFS who are extremely helpful
..update tomorrow!..

I wouldn't say it was ntd till the water been tested.
Neons can go pale in the red stripe area due to bad water quality.
We need to rule out bad water quality first.

For now water change and increase aeration in the tank.

Got home from work today and 3 of the neons no longer with us. Including the 'emergency' one..

Meanwhile the fishies are swimming around happily in their newly cleaned+aerated tank.

Not done a cycle yet so off to LFS to get all the bits plus water test.

Thanks for all help / advice

Have you been using the matured filter sponges or have you thrown them away.
