I saw a fish in a store in a tank all by itself, labeled 'Neon Blue Ram' and it was an extremely vibrant blue. It also said 'new variety' and it was $26. I looked it up and found no information whatsoever. If this a dyed fish or is it natural? Is there any site that has details about this fish? I'm just curious.

hmm, can you take a pic of it, sounds interesting. Since they are pretty colorful already. Would be a cool fish to have if its natural. I dont like when they dye fish though.

I don't get to go to this pet store often because it is a bit out of the way for me... but I will take a picture if they still have them my next visit. It was a very interesting looking fish so I hope it isn't dyed...

Can't find anything at all about "Neon Blue Rams". Was it a German Blue Ram relabelled. If not, I would suspect it's a dyed fish. Did the colouring look natural???

It looked a lot different than a German Blue Ram. It was purely a very, very bright blue. Yeah I can't find anything on it either... maybe I can go this weekend and get a photo. I also find it to be WAY too expensive to be a regular Ram... the single one in the tank was $26...

Here's a pic guys. My local store just got them in. They say they are the first in Australia to get them and are charging 69.95 each. Personally I like the look of normal blue rams better.

Although the coloring looks unnatural, I don't think they are dyed. I believe that the dye would not cover the black spot all German Blue Ram have on the side of them. Also, unless it is a total sales gimmick, a dyed fish would not normally cost that much more then a non dyed version of the same species! Never seen them before though, thanks for sharing the picture.

thats stunning, but i wonder what it looks like in a tank etc, i think my GBR tops that :p :D

my lfs has them aswell and charge about $23 for them a waste if you ask me since the normal ones look much more attractive.

Hey Guys,

I brought a breeding pair 6 days ago for $40 in my local WA pet store. I also have a German ram in the same tank and I personally love the blue neon rams, under the correct light they are amazing!!!!! They are not as aggressive as the normal German ram if anyone wanted to give them a go.

they are indeed a blue variant of the GBR. as far as im aware they are not dyed and are bred like this in a similar way to the electric blue jack dempsey. some of my lfs have had them in for a while with the price starting at £17 each but they didnt sell as well so they are now £10 each which is a bit more like a price i might want to pay if a ram was on my wanted list. personally i think i prefer the normal GBR though........

try googling electric blue ram you will have much more luck :good:

They're Mikrogeophagus ramirezi or German Blue Rams, but are a different strain, keep in the same way you would a normal German Blue Ram - Acidic PH, Sand substrate and high temperatures (28-32oC).

these neon blue rams are actually bred to there color just like the electric blue jack dempsey im my local shop they order them in for u at a price of €35 a peice but yes they are nice

Beautiful fish, like most rams are but due to so much inbreeding to get to that kind of colouring the fish are so delicate and very prone to illness and unfortunately, unexplained deaths. I've stopped keeping GBR's simply because losing so many of them was getting to be a pain in the rear and also pretty hard on my kids who got too attached to them.

Also, one of the downsides to getting to such striking colouration is the amount of deformed fish caused by the intensive breeding. It's market forces though and people do buy them so can't blame the breeders for trying to get new strains.
