What do you guys think of Blind Cave Tetras? I saw them in the LFS and they looked freaky weird because they have NO EYES whatsover! :alien: I was wondering if anyone had them and what their opinion was of them.

i know lotsa people like them, and they are very interesting, but they're icky icky icky!! i dont like em very much :p :X bleurgh...

Why? What makes them ickypoo to you?

No eyes.
Almost transparent fleshy color.
Swims gracefully without bumping into anything. What more could anyone ask for? :alien:

Please try to find out why it died before you go and get more. Do they need specific conditions - they live in dark caves, therefore living in a well lit tank with no hidey places would stress them to the point of death. They have developed into what they are because of their way of life and forcing them to live differently is not right.

I don't have room now in my community tank, but if I did I would get some more of them. :D

They are admirable fish that everyone who sees them comments on. They show that fish, like people, can get along fine even with what we think of as a physical handicap.

:book: They were found in Mexico living in caves where they have been for many many generations. Since it was so dark they evolved with no eyes. Their other senses compensate for this and they are completely at ease finding food and being around other fish.

They are peaceful and sturdy fish that are easy for anyone to keep with no special treatment or attention. :D

Can I keep them in a goldfish bowl as I do the bettas, or do they require aeriation and filtration?

>>> living in a well lit tank

They have no eyes, they wouldn't know it was brightly lit! I've never kept them, but people I know that have kept them in their illuminated tanks with other normal fish. They were pefectly happy and amongst the first onto the food!!

If you like them, fine, if you don't, well, fine also! Live and let live.

I think they would be better in a tank, Itty Bitty Betta. :)

They get to be about 2 1/2 to 3 inches long but their bodies are more substantial than the bettas. I think they probably need more food, etc., and they are not air breathers like bettas.

I have known someone that kept one with goldfish, though, although I think they kept their temperature in the low 70s.

Here's some more information in case anyone is interested:

:book: The sexes can be distinguished by the males being much slimmer than the females. They can be bred in a 15 gallon tank with water level at 6" and several layers of marbles on the bottom. Temperature should be at 75 to 78 degrees. The fry hatch in 1 to 2 days and are easily raised.

Hummmmm............I never raised tetras, but............
