I found a 50 gallon tank for my betta grow-out tank. It's $100 bucks (CAD) too! What a deal!

Anyways, my question is: does the stand look sturdy enough to hold 50 gallons of water?

I've never had a tank larger than 10 gallon before so I'm not sure if I'll need to buy an appropriate stand or if that one will be okay.

Oooooh, that tank stand looks pretty darned skinny to me! - But then i am Mr Paranoid when it come to this, i hate the way all tank stands are made of nasty, horrible, crappy and cheap chipboard with tacky laminate wood effect covering, even our rena tank at £1200 is buit this way.

It is all down to the design though really, obviously glass doesn't really flex before it cracks so you need the surface that the tank will be sitting in to be as flat and level as possible and not flex along it's length with the weight.

I don't know what your tank works out to in litres but i'm pretty sure that one litre is equal to 1kg approx.

I'd also say that the whole surface area of the bottom of the tank needs to be supported and be sitting on a sheet of polystyrene to take up any slight un-evenities.

If the tank has been set up on that stand before then i'd say you'll be fine though - if you start to fill it and your not to sure then don't risk it, your concerned enough to post about it in the first place, once it's all set up it'll be too late and it'll play on your mind if you have any doubts about it.

You want him nice and sturdy!

I hope this helps you

Not only does it look a bit lightweight, I can't see any kind of bracing to prevent the stand shearing. Another of the mods knows a great deal about wood, and construction, I'll PM him to take a look.

That's halarious man we shop at the same place :)

LOL! I love craigslist. I've found so many great things on there.

Thanks for your help guys. I decided not to get it as I don't think I have room for a 50 gallon tank and I don't want to go through the hassle of finding a suitable stand. I think I might use one of those larger plastic storage containers as my grow out tank instead.
