Need Your Advice On Spare Tank For Cory Fry.

WHo cares about stockings. This is my thread about what I'm going to do with my babies.

You could put half in the smaller tank, and leave the rest were they are.

They are too small and would be eaten unfortunately.

What about using a sponge filter? I heard they are good for fry because they dont get caught in the filter. You might get better answer if you asked this in the Catfish section. Im just using a 10 gallon with an airstone and heater right now. My fry are 4 days old. I plan on getting a sponge filter in a couple weeks. Im doing water changes every 2 days.

Good Luck

10G tank is $10CDN ..sponge filter is like $7, heater is like...$30 total around $50 ..$1 per fry hmmm, then i can use the tank later as quarentine, hospital, or for later fry...so why not?

Are you doing the same? :S

Women stockings.

Could you use man stockings? :dunno:

I think its a great idea. :D Dunno about conditions though. With the main tank you can see the fish acting funny if anything is wrong with the tank. With babies they'd be harder or impossible to tell if anythings wrong. Would be good if you could put a couple of fish in to know everythings ok - they'd probably eat babies though. Filter is going to be in main tank before it goes in little one. Maybe with water changes, drain main tank, then little tank, use big tank water to fill up little tank again and fresh water to fill up main tank? Prob talking rubbish but my thoughts. :fun:

I agree, you are talking rubbish. What do you mean about draining main tank then little tank? My plan was to fill little tank with main tank water as it will be cycled and so will the filter when I plop it in little tank, then of course put substrate in little tank from big tank.
Man stockings would be man sized and extra strong I would imagine. :flex: Mind you, that guy has a ladder in his.

Yeah I know you were going to do that to start with. Im thinking about after that - maintaining it. If you were doing a water change in the little tank would you use more water from the main tank (like i said in post) or would you use fresh water with that additive? If you use water from main tank you know its fine.

They wouldnt be man sized and strong if they came off that guy.

I'd want to give the babies fresh water. If I put main tank water in as a water change it would be "dirty" with ammonia from adult fish. For instant tank purposes I will be initiallly filling it up with main tank water so babies go straight from main tank to wee tank and it will be the same water.

Hmmmmmm ITs lack of room that would be a problem!!!! What size is it anyway? :)

Hi Lynz781 :)

I think you have a problem there. :/

You really should try to find room for a bigger tank. It will take a 10 or better, a 20 gallon tank to give them enough room to grow big enough for the lfs to take them. Any less and they will be stunted or die. If you put them into your main tank and they grow, it will put all your fish at risk due to the additional bio-load. Take a look at this thread to see the kind of growth you should expect between the 2nd and 4th months of their life:

At this point, I would suggest putting them in a larger tank with a shallow sand bottom. A sponge filter, run by an air pump will start cultivating beneficial bacteria, but keep up doing daily water changes with freshly dechlorinated water, for another month or so, because they are so small. By then, they should be big enough that you can split your airline and add a box filter for real filtration.

This is the kind of sponge filter I am talking about:

I use the second one over from the left for my fry tanks, once they are big enough. A sponge filter provides gentle filtration and microorganisms, that they will snack on, will grow on them too.
