I received a new Boyu drop checker from AE today with some 4dKH solution. Now this is prob a noob question but how on earth do you get the 4dkh into the glass ball bit? I am using a syringe but the liquid wont go in because of the air inside.

What am I doing wrong???

Cheers
Jake

Hi Jake, dont panic it just needs a little coaxing thats all, i find the best way is to turn it upside down and place the open end onto the plam of your hand and shake a little at a time until it all goes in, regards john

So I do a bit at time. Is the amount of solution critical? Some will obviously get lost during this process...

Jake,

I find using one of those pipettes you get with testing kits makes it so much easier. Once you have the amount in the pipette just turn the drop checker upside down and squeeze the fluid in.

Good luck :good:

Thanks Guys, just one more question.

Should the solution be green all the time? when I put checker in the tank it was blue then I went out for a few hours, when I came back it had turned green. Bear in mind this was after 6pm when the Co2 and lights where off. Then this morning it was still green?

Does it stay green even when the lights and CO2 are switched off?

Yeah if all is good it should be green most of the time. It might get a lighter green in the morning and darker green towards lights off. It also takes a few hours to react as well.

Thanks. appears all is good :good: just need to get rid of the brown hair algae now

How long has the tank been set up?

Hair algae is common when the tank is being cycled or has just finished cycling. Just keep removing as much as you can by hand and it will most likely go away once the plants get properly established (It took about 3 weeks for mine to clear).

Its been setup about 4 weeks or so but the pressurised Co2 went in last week. I have been removing as much as poss by hand. So will it just die and go away? I have lots of dwarf hairgrass and its between all the strands, looks a right mess and is difficult to remove without uprooting the grass.

Yeah sounds like exactly the same that happened to me. Starting coming in at about 4 weeks got really bad around the 5th or 6th week then was gone by around the 8th week. It just died off and dissapeared.

I found a really useful way to remove it was to use a toothbrush. It gets in between the strands of hairgrass and pulls the algae out while leaving the hairgrass in place (mostly :) ). You can also use it to "catch" strands and the twirl it round to make it easier to get it all out (think "eating Spaghetti").

I did cut my lighting down a bit but I dont think this made any difference. Regular water changes might help as well (I did two water changes a week while the tank was cycling until the hair algae went away) I have nothing to prove that it will though ;)

Lol, I have been using a toothbrooth! great minds etc..

I'm glad yours died and disappeared as I was fearing the worst. I'm dosing Ei so doing 50% weekly water changes hopefully thats enough.
I guess I will have to be patient now.

Many thanks you have put my mind at ease!

Jake, if it is only the hairgrass being affected, I would cut it right back to substrate level and start again. Newly planted hairgrass can be a real algae magnet, so hopefully the healthy new growth should be algae free.

Dave.

Well its effected everything but the Hairgrass is most difficult to clear so looks worse. Trimming it backs sounds like a plan, btw my ottos and shrimp wont touch the stuff? fussy gits

Hopefully I'm over the worst now.
