I am changing my 55 gallon freshwater tank into a saltwater tank. I dont know if i trust my fish stores around here. If anyone can tell me what i need to do in order to change it it would be a great help. Was wondering if i will need a new filtration system and if i need to do anything to clean it first. Or anything else i need to get and what you reccommend to get

Also I want to put a Snowflake eel and a Niger Trigger in there. And a couple other stuff dont know yet.

This will be my first saltwater tank and i am kind of new to this so any help will be appretiated...

-Thanks

i don't know that both the eel and the niger will fit in the tank. the niger will get up to a foot long, and the eel 2feet. granted eels curl around and don't need as much room as fish but with all the meat you'd be throwing in that tank, there will probably be a huge bio-load. also, i have a 120g tank and am beginning to wonder if the niger will be too big for my tank at some point. I'm sure he won't but if you've seen some big nigers you'd understand where i'm coming from.

as for starting up in the hobby, you should peruse the pinned topics. they have great info. all i did wuz read everything here and anywhere else i could before i started the hobby and ask specific questions if i wuz flummoxed.

for filtration i use 120lbs of Live Rock (you want about a pound of LR per gallon of water) and i have 2 canister filters. In 1 of the canisters i took all the media out and basically just use them for water movement. I also have 4 powerheads to keep the flow going. You'll learn about this kind of stuff after you go through the pinned topics. Good Luck

edited to add, i didn't realize we weren't in the chit chat section...here is the link to the section with the pinned ish:

Well i really want a moray eel. Do you think a snowflake eel is the best type to get for my size tank? Also What tank mates would you reccommend i get?

Also do you reccommend a skimmer?

This is very confussing having all these posts in different sections on the same thing

Having an Eel in a 50g will severely limit the tank mate you can add as it will dine on any small fish & also snails, crabs etc.

Is your tank 50g US or UK ??

US. The eels where i buy them are really small so if he does eventually outgrow the tank i can always trade him in. Will the snowflake eel eat a lot of my fish? What tankmates would you reccommend

why would you want to "rent" the fish for a while? why not just get a bigger tank so you can accomidate the animals you want? or just not get them?

Well actually i plan on keeping the eel and not "renting it" BUT if i could see it outgrows my tank i will trade it in so it doesnt die. But i have seen and heard people put there eels in a smaller tank then i have and they look healthy. I already have a 55 gallon tank and thats the biggest i could really fit in the space i am putting it in. I plan on getting a bigger tank when i get older but that wont be for a while.

Basically my plan is to get a snowflake eel and maybe 2, 3, or maybe 4 other fish in my tank. So if thats possible i will be a happy camper.

I just didnt say what i meant to say when you ask if i am renting it. I really hope i can have my eel and my fish and then sit back and enjoy. :)

Also one more thing... IF anyone knows any good tankmates for a SFE please tell me.

Thanks for all the info guys you have been a big help :D

-Thanks
