Hello

ive rencetly acquired a Rena Filstar xp3 model and it works fine but its leaking water from where the power cord comes out of the motor head.

any ideas what this could be. i thought it was a faulty O ring that seals the motor head to the cannister so have ordered one but that wont be here till end of the week. but just wanted to know if that is the problem or not. im not too familiar with these filters so am not sure what the problem could be ... any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I have never seen a leak there on mine, or anywhere else but have a look at where the hoses plug into the power head. There are a pair of O-rings there that need to make a good seal or the filter would get a bit of water around the top near where you are noticing it. It may even be that the release lever is not all the way down, it is certainly worth checking.

well the lever is fully down but i had a look at those O rings and cant see a fault with them but i may put some vaseline around them and then try again. there was about a litre of water in the head which cant be good.

just got my manual out and it states -

IF WATER IS LEAKING FROM WHERE THE POWER CORD PASSES OUT OF THE MOTOR HOUSING -
- make sure the filter is no more than 55" (140cm) below the water level.if it is deeper then raise the filter.
- check the hoses and make sure they have not been cut too short or stretched too far creating tension on the quick-disconnect. if the hoses have been cut too short then change them.

hope this helps :good:

Matt.

You could try some silicone around it! If its just a drip it should be ok! Or is it pressured?

ok well i have checked the o rings on the wuick disconnect and took them off and checked and also cut the tube down as there was quite alot of excess tubing.. now filter works fine and no leaking but i get alot of bubbles coming out of the outlet pipe as the water enters the tank. and this has been happening for last day or two.... is this normal.

Give it a shake while it is still working and they will come out! just trapped air!

Bubbles are not very common on that filter after the first 5 minutes or so. It sounds like you have solved your inlet flow problem and that has turned your water leak into an in-leakage of air. Whatever seal is not right, is still not sealing. It is time to do a little detective work and find the air leak, it will be a water leak when the filter stops, as it would with a power failure.

hello

well i have replaced the o rings on the quick disconnect and have replaced the big o ring that connects the motor head to the cannister and i still get the bubbles. to be honest i dont mind the bubbles as it saves me putting an air pump in the tank but i am just worried that it maybe damaging to the filter as its not normal. ive looked around everywhere and cannot seem to find the leak. the water line in the cannister sits about a cm above where the motor head sits in the cannister. i will take a pic for you to see

this pic shows the water line in the cannister which has been sitting at this level for the last 3 days since its been on

this pic shows the amount of bubbles that has been coming out in the last 3 days.. the bubbles has neither increased nor decreased - new o rings or cutting the tubing down has solved the problem.

where could the air be leaking from.

just to note the flow of water is still quite powerful.

The tubes on that are not the ones that Rena supplies. You might be getting some air leaking into the filter inlet from a loose joint in the tubing or something similar. My own filter has an almost identical water level as you can see in the picture. It does remind me that there is an o-ring at just that level located inside the filter. You need to make sure that one is seated properly too.

The pump housing is surrounded by an O-ring where it sits down onto the top cover. The top cover I am talking about is the one with the raised lip in this picture of the filter basket stack.

Hello

thanks for that, i will check that o ring and see if that is securely fitted. and see what happens. if not i am guesing i will check all the tubing to see if i can spot something.

if there is a leak in the tubing wouldnt that squirt out water rather then suck in air due to the high pressure.

This happens on occasion to me as well. Take the rubber seal off and put some vasaline on it. Also drain all the water out of the filter and start again. I think this may just be because the seal did not set right. You will need to keep an eye on it for a few hours after you put it back together.

A leak on the inlet hose is an air leak. The inlet is a siphon and doesn't see any pressure. Even the filter housing itself is under a slight negative pressure because the impeller is constantly pumping out of it. That is why we have been inspecting the filter to find air leaks.

oh right. havent got round to checking it yet as have been away from home for a few days... wil keep you guys posted. thanks for the help though.
