I just bought 3 new betta boys from petcetera...the conditions were absolutely horrible, i handed the sales girl 5 dead boys and there were more dead in the back row.
Anyway...
I got 3 beautiful boys and one i'm not sure what's going on with him...he can't seem to stay afloat. His belly isn't swollen but he seems to prefer being on his side on the bottom. Every once in a while he'll swim to the top for air but he seems to have to work really hard to get up there.
My question...he's in a tall 1G, should i move him over to the wider shallower 1/2...still big enough for him to swim back and for and even up and down, but easier for him to get air.
What do you think? I gave him extra stress coat and also some bettafix just for extra measure.

For now, yes. I think that'll make it easier for him to get up for air. Do you have any silk or real plants in the tank? As that will probably help him stay on top.
Is there anything visibly wrong with him? Does he have any spots on him? Bad fins? Are his scales sticking out? Does he swim fine and not sideways?

i just have plastic plants.

His fins are fine, he swims fine, no discoloration...he's perfect looking except for some torn fins from the horrible conditions, he just can't seem to stop sinking. He's so pretty...i'll post pictures as soon as i figure out how. -_-

If you barely got him, he is probably just really stressed. Did you acclimate him to the tank by putting some of the water of your tank into the cup so he would get use to it? Was the water in the cup really dirty?
I would just leave him alone for a while and see how he does these next days. My first boy was also like that. He would just lay on the bottom and frantically try to go up for air. After two days he got better.

Does he lay like this?

This is my little Flop, who has some serious swim bladder problems. BUT the good news is that many of them can recover from it. Flop had nearly completely recovered before he relapsed over a weekend that I was away from him.

It seems to be bacterial infection based, and success has been had treating with Maracyn, and treating with Maracyn 2 (two separate cases). Keep him in a wide, shallow bowl, and add plants or perches to help keep him near the top of the water. Keep the water very clean, and add 1/2 teaspoon of aquarium salt per gallon of water.

There absolutely is. I've had Flop for maybe as long as two months now, and, though he's not ENTIRELY better due to his relapse, he's alive, strong, eats well, flares, and bubblenests.

I really doubt it. This not does seem to be a painful condition. It looks awful, and it's a bit awkward for them to get around, but I REALLY doubt there's any pain involved. Flop has never acted like he was in pain at all.
